Forever 21

People seem to think I'm a lot younger than I actually am.  For example, the movers thought I was Bubba's big sister.  They were a little surprised to discover that I'm actually the mom.

That silliness continued yesterday.  My daughter and I went to the mall to do a little back-to-school clothes shopping.  As we walked, a twenty-something-year-old guy called out, "Looking good, sisters!"

"Sisters?" my daughter asked.

I shrugged and walked on.

We went into a store called Forever 21.  My daughter picked out some clothes and then we made our way to the register to check out.  "Can I see your student ID?" the cashier asked.  "You can get a discount."

I laughed.  "I'm not a student.  I'm an old lady."

The cashier looked at me.  "You're kidding, right?"

"Nope.  I'm over forty."

Her jaw dropped.  "No way!  I would've never guessed you were that old!"

Yeah.  I'm ancient.

As my daughter and I walked back through the mall, some other guys checked us out.

"Mom, this is terrible!" my daughter said.  "I must look really old if they think we're sisters."  She wrinkled her forehead.  "See? I even have wrinkles!"

"Yes, girlfriend.  We're two old ladies trying to be forever 21!"

(Maybe she and I could be the spokespersons for Forever 21.  I bet it would pay better than blogging!)

  1. Haha! What a great compliment to you, but I can imagine your daughter's consternation!

  2. Although it may be irritating sometimes, I think it's a tribute to your lovely skin and trim figure. One of the women at my hairdresser looks no more than late twenties but is actually in her late thirties. Good genes, you know - your daughter will thank you in the future.

    1. I'm very fortunate to have good genes. Both of my parents look very young for their age.

  3. You should!
No one believes I'm almost fifty. Once in a very great while, I even get carded while buying a bottle of wine. If that doesn't make you feel good, I don't know what does!

  6. That should make your day! Your career opportunities are endless!

  7. A great compliment! If this continues, then each decade you will look ten years younger than you are!

My daughter gets annoyed when no one thinks she's the age she is. They all assume she's much younger. This is aggravating when you're young and ego-boosting when you're not!

    1. I was always teased for looking so young when I was a kid. I'm glad it has its benefits now!

  8. When The Hurricane was a teen, people quite often asked if we were sisters. They don't ask now. Enjoy!

    2. I didn't start to look like an adult until I was about 50. Now people are surprised that I'm 54. I glory in it.

  9. I've always looked younger than I am, too. Which is a mixed blessing. It's funny as heck (to me!) when people think my hubby (who's the same age as I am) is my father, but it's annoying when they think I should be able to "do things" a younger person can do. I guess I want it both ways. Stroke me ego all ya want by telling me how young I look, but don't hassle me about giving me my senior discount, dammit!

    But bottom line? Enjoy it!

    1. Yes. Maybe I should get license plates that say, "ANCNT 1"!

      Thanks for the compliment!

    1. Okay. I've been using sunscreen on my face every day since I was 16 years old. I now use Arbonne anti-aging products. I've been using them for about seven years. I think they work pretty well. Also, I watch what I eat (except for chocolate and ice cream), and I run 2 miles every day (or almost every day). That's it.

  12. What a great compliment. What did hubby say about all the compliments? I think you should be the spokesperson for Forever 21 AND take the discounts.

    1. Hubby says when he met me 15 years ago, I looked like I was 12. Now he says I look like I'm 21. I think your suggestion sounds great! ;)

  14. If your picture is any indication, you look VERY young. If MY picture is any indication, I'm a creepy gray-haired guy who sits on curbside toilets.
Sometimes, pictures tell all they need to.

  15. Are you old enough to remember the dish detergent ads with the mother and daughter and their hands... Of course, that was back when people washed dishes by hand!

Last year I was in a coffee place in NC and the cashier told the guy--she obviously knew him--that since he was now 55, he got the senior rate (it was only 50 cent). So I asked for the senior rate and had to show her my drivers license (and help her with the math) to prove that I was 55

    1. Yes, I do remember those commercials!

That's a great compliment to you to have to show your license. You must be in great shape! I'm sure all that outdoor activity helps!

  16. When a young girl is referred to as mature and sophisticated, it's a great compliment. When an older woman is referred to as youthful, it's a wonderful feeling... so enjoy the moment!
After all, age IS only a number. It's your spirit and attitude that really count!

  18. Your posts always make me smile. Lucky you! If I looked like my son's sister, I wouldn't be complaining.

  19. You'll appreciate your youthful looks when you're 60! Too bad your daughter was offended, but I have to admit, it's funny. :-)
