The Birthday Present

My daughter's birthday is in a few weeks.  She has a special request for a birthday present. "Mom," she said.  "Can you get me a broom for my birthday?"

I looked at the girl, completely shocked.  "A broom?  What for?  Are you planning on flying away on one?"

"No, Mom.  Don't be silly.  I really need one.  The broom we have is full of Schultz hair. (Schultz is our German Shepherd, in case you're new here.)  I can't sweep the floors with it."

My daughter's job is to clean our floors, so I saw her point.  "Fine. I'll get you a new broom.  But it doesn't have to be a birthday present."

"But I want it for my birthday."

Okay.  Whatever. That's the oddest birthday request I've ever heard from a twelve-year-old.  Maybe I should get her a mop and a bucket, too!

  1. I'm glad she doesn't think she has to get expensive gifts on her birthday. My son was like that when he was younger. You are doing a good job.

  2. Don't argue with her! Put a bow on it and give her the best broom ever. In a few years she'll want a new car. Enjoy this.

    1. I don't think we're doing anything elaborate this year. She still hasn't made enough friends to do that. But we'll have family over.

    1. She is thoughtful. Although I'd have to say a broom for one's birthday is a baffling request!

  6. I agree with Alex, give her a nice looking broom and add a fancy bow.

  7. When The Hurricane was in middle school, a friend gave her a broom for her birthday. It hadn't been all that long since the Harry Potter books had started coming out. The Hurricane and all her friends loved them. So the friend gave Hurricane Harry Potter's broom with its name on the handle and a special wrapping around the bristles to explain from whence it came. That was a very cool gift.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. I bet she never swept even the tiniest crumb with it, though!

    2. Oh, no! One doesn't use Harry Potter's broom for sweeping. Besides, we didn't sweep. We vacuumed everything.

    1. Who knows! There has to be some ulterior motive here!

  10. You better give her a second present or the broom could came back to haunt you as she tells stories of her upbringing. :) I remember one year my brother wanted a little decorative Christmas tree for Christmas. He got it but to this day doesn't remember getting anything else and teases my parent's constantly.

  11. Wow--that's actually awesome in a sense. She sounds pretty devoted to helping you take care of the house. I'd never ask for something that'd help me with my chores as a gift, that's for sure!!

    1. I wouldn't, either. She does get an allowance for it. That's her real motivation. ;)
