One-armed Pirate

Yesterday, my son had a little accident with his scooter and broke his wrist.  He's now sporting a cast and sling.  Needless to say, it's a little tough for him to do basic things, like get dressed and write his name.

"Mama, I need a little help here," he said.

"What do you need, Bubba?"

"Help getting my shirt on."  We struggled at least five minutes, trying to get it on.  Finally, his arm was through the sleeve.

"Mama, is this how it is for pirates?"

I looked at the boy a little funny.  "What do you mean?"

"Like Captain Hook.  He had a hook instead of a hand.  And Long John Silver.  He had a peg instead of a leg. They must've had a hard time getting dressed!"

"Well, Bubba, I hadn't really thought of it, but now that you mention it, they probably did have a hard time. "

A few minutes later, my boy had to sign a birthday card for one of his friends.  I looked at the chicken scratch when he was done.  It looked like more than his name, but I couldn't figure out what it said, because it was so illegible.

"Dude, what are you trying to say, here?"

"It's my name, Mama:  Bubba, the one-armed pirate!"

  2. Hahaha! That is SO cute! He's adorable, and it's wonderful he's empathetic to others who face challenges. You must be a great momma. :)

    1. I'm not going to let him read this, or he's going to get ideas of going to the pet store and getting a feathered friend!

    1. Not yet. It's just all wrapped up from the emergency room. We still have to visit the orthopedic doctor. I'm sure he'll have a cast. He wants a blue or red one.

  8. I love his outlook. When our boys were little, we overheard them talking about wanting to be the "toughest" pirate, with TWO hooks and TWO eyepatches and TWO peg legs. All we could picture was that pirate clattering his way across the deck, back and forth...

  12. If your son is anything like mine, he is proud of his cast. When they told my son his arm wasn't broken, he was disappointed. Just recently a bike pedal made some serious wounds on his leg that needed stitches. He couldn't wait to show everyone and he was 12. I love the stories of your children and glad I found this blog as one of MJ's techs. This is one I am really going to enjoy.

Let's face it... those pirates MUST have had a hard time getting dressed! He has a valid point!

    1. They probably didn't do it often, since there weren't many laundry mats when they were out at sea! (Can you just imagine how bad they smelled?)

  15. Can't say I've given much thought to how a pirate gets dressed either, good point, Bubba! Hope the wrist heals quickly.

  21. Poor Bubba! Hope his wrist is feeling okay, but lots of things must be a bit of a challenge. This might be one of those time when he would find a cloned mama really helpful! Speedy recovery to Bubba.
