Best Food in the World

Last night, Bubba and I went to International Night at his school. Tables were set up in the cafeteria, loaded with trays of food from around the world.

"Okay, Bubba," I said.  "Load up your plate and try some of this stuff!"

He did.  He piled funny fried things, rice things, stinky things, chicken things, and numerous other unidentifiable things.  And then he found the American stand - hot dogs and potato chips.  Of course he had to get those.

Then he sat down at a table to sample the things.  He bit into a fried thing from the India table and made a face.  "Yuck!"  He gave me the other one.

I tried it.  "It's made with curry," I said.

He tried a chicken thing from South Korea and gave a little nod.  "This is okay."

He tried things from Turkey, China, Hungary, Mexico, Argentina, and Greece. Then he tried the hot dog.  He grinned after he took a bite of that.  "Mama, America has the best food in the world!"

  1. That's what I love is that we have so many different cuisines. What Hungarian food did he try?

    1. I couldn't even tell you. It wasn't goulash or paprikash. That's all I know.

  2. At least he tried every thing.
My family, including my wife, refuses to try anything.

    1. My son is pretty brave. Actually, everyone in my family is. We try it at least once. If we like it, we have it again.

    2. Not a culinary explorer? I just don't like things with eyeballs staring at me. Something isn't right about that!

  4. Because we have the biggest variety!
Although I think Thai food is the best in the world.
And yes, at least he sampled everything.

  5. When The Hurricane was young, she had a friend whose family is Greek. I'll never forget my first taste of baklava.

    1. Sweet! We liked to go to the Greek Festival when we lived in Cleveland. There was some pretty good food there.

  8. LOL, I think Bubba might be biased, since he grew up with American food and all! :P

  9. He's a good little gourmet- I have difficulty getting my younger daughter to try even some of the food from here!

    1. Pizza, hot dogs and hamburgers. Those are his favorite foods. (But he does like my tuna noodle casserole.)

  13. I've had rabbit and octopus before...two things I never thought I would eat. I was an au pair in Switzerland at the time. The parents told me not to tell the kids about the rabbit (at a restaurant) because they had pets, you see... My younger son (age 15) LOVES that "Bizarre Foods" show. I can't watch it sometimes. :p

  17. Good for him for his willingness to try unusual food. I remember "tasting" a lot of things with my eyeballs as a kid. Drove my mom crazy.

Funny, but I've never been a big hot dog fan. Does that make me Un-American???
