Angry Birds

Yesterday, I was wandering around my yard, pulling weeds and vines that threatened to overrun the landscaping.  As I came to a bush on the side of my garage, I noticed a particularly nasty-looking vine sprouting off the top, winding all through the foliage.  That's got to go, I thought.

With my handy-dandy rose pruning gloves, I grabbed that thorny thing and began yanking it out of there.

Two seconds later, I heard quite a commotion.  I looked up in time to see two very angry birds in position to dive bomb me.  I grabbed the vine and retreated to the far side of the bush.  That wasn't good enough.  The birds squawked and swooped down on me.

I dropped the vine and bolted for the garage before those angry creatures could peck my eyeballs out.  They didn't follow me, but they parked themselves nearby, still squawking, and keeping an eye on me.

I really don't think they were protecting the vine.  But I do believe I must've been awfully close to their nest.  All I know, is that is one Mama (and Papa) I don't want to make angry ever again!

  1. Uh-oh. Better leave the vines alone! You can never tell if a vine is well-connected and has powerful friends. :O

    1. I keep thinking they're magpies. They're definitely Georgia birds, because I never saw them in Ohio. I'll have to remember to look them up so I can know for sure.

  6. I was going to make a horrible bird pun but I have to go to work and can't think of one right now. I'm just glad you egg-scaped. Oops, guess I had one after all.

    I'll see myself out now.

  10. As long as they don't start shooting each other at you with a slingshot you should be fine. ;-)

  13. I've been on walks and encountered trees with nests. It's always scary when birds swoop down for the minute I'm in the area. I pick up my speed.

    1. I've never really had problems with birds. But apparently these two had a big problem with me!

  14. Goodness! That sounds like a scary experience. Nothing that dramatic has happened to me so far with my gardening. Fingers crossed that it doesn't. Glad they didn't attack you.

  15. Glad you are okay! Birds can be ferocious protecting their nests. I once got too close to a red-tailed hawk's nest (I didn't know it was there), he dive-bombed me--I ran away just in time, but felt the turbulence from his wings on my neck.

    1. Red tailed hawks are big birds! It would've hurt to have been pecked by him!

  17. Yikes! We had a squatter (bird) in the middle of our yard for a bit, and I have no idea what possessed the thing to take up residence on the ground, in the open. Crazy. When my son ran the lawn mower, the thing spread its wings and squawked at him like, "Don't you dare bring that monster machine anywhere near my nest!" Sadly, the eggs it laid didn't make it--poached by predators. *sigh*

    1. So much for the bird's excellent guard tactics.

  18. HA! I had to laugh at this one. I actually had a similiar incident a few years ago, except I was simply walking my dog past a particular tree. This angry bird swooped out, smacked me in the back of the head, circled, and goosed my dog! We both ran as fast as we could back to the house. Crazy!
