Hunger Signs

Lately, I've been out of the house quite a bit, hanging with musician friends and playing chamber music.  My son has not been pleased about this.

When I was about to walk out the door yesterday, he scowled at me.  "Mama, why do you have to go, again?  I'm going to starve!"

I shook my head.  "Bubba, I happen to like playing with my musician friends.  You're not going to starve.  Your dad is here, and so is your sister.  And I'm sure you are perfectly capable of making your own peanut butter and jelly sandwich if they don't do it for you."

"They never feed me.  And I'm a terrible PBJ maker."  He paused for a moment.  "And do you know what else?"

"What else, Bubba?"

"I'm already experiencing the hunger signs."

I tried not to laugh.  "Hunger signs?  Tell me about the hunger signs."

"First, your tummy makes funny noises.  Then it starts feeling sick.  And if you tap on it, it sounds hollow."  He pointed to his tummy.  "Tap on it, Mama."

I did.  "Sounds fine to me, Bubba."

"No, Mama.  You didn't do it right."  He tapped again.  "It's definitely getting hollow.  It's a hunger sign!"

I shook my head and grabbed a banana.  "Okay, Bubba.  Eat this.  It'll fix your hunger sign."

He stared at me in disbelief as I shoved it into his hand, grabbed my violin and viola, and headed out the door.

(I'm such a bad Mama!)

  1. Better than handing him a bag a chips! And tell him he needs to let you jam. That's what us musicians do.

  3. I think you need to hang out with other musicians from time to time. It is good for your sanity. Why not a banana? I like bananas. I think it is so wonderful that you play various instruments.

  4. You are a good mama. He needs to become independent. Did you see the movie A Late Quartet? (I hope I have the name right.) I've been wondering if it's an accurate representation of the music world.

    1. I did not see A Late Quartet. Is that the one with all the old musicians in the nursing home? We'll have to chat about it, and you can tell me what this representation is, and I can tell you if it's accurate. The music world can be really crazy!

    2. No. I can't think of the title of the movie about the elderly musicians. A Late Quartet is more esoteric. It has Christopher Walken and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Catherine Keener, I think. I hope I spelled those names correctly. In fact, I wonder if I got the title right.

    3. Then I'm thinking of a different movie. You'll have to tell me more about this Late Quartet movie.

  5. It's good to get them to stand on their own. He is a funny little man, though.

  6. Ah, nobody feeds Bubba anymore.... these days.... You know, in TRUE BLOOD novels there was a vampire called Bubba who was actually Elvis Presley and he fed himself on cats......

    1. I'd better make sure Bootsy is well hidden before I leave then! I wouldn't want Bubba chowing on Bootsy!

  8. Bubba should learn to like bananas. You don't have to cook them or fix them, or grow them. I'm sure he's missing Mama, but glad you're having fun playing music with your friends.

    1. Bananas are perfect. I do a lot of banana munching myself, because sometimes I just don't have time to eat. ;0)

    1. I had a terrific time! If I could get my boy to be consistent about practicing his instruments, he might actually get good enough to write his own songs!

  12. It's actually been scientifically proven that food tastes better when somebody else makes it, because our sense of smell desensitizes the taste of the food while it's being cooked.

That being said, when I was about 8, my mom reread her favorite book series. For a week, every time I said that I was hungry, she told me to go make a sandwich. At least you handed him a banana! haha

    1. That's interesting. I guess I enjoy food other people make rather than what I've made. Now I know why!

  13. You are a good mama! Fruit is a good snack. I'm betting Bubba was hoping for something else, like maybe you making the PB&J sandwich for him. Glad you are able to get together with your musician friends. : )
