Lost Youth

First of all, thank you to everyone who stopped by and left comments for Virginia Wright in the last post.  You made her feel very welcome.  You guys are awesome!  The winner of the autographed copy of Virginia's book, Wild Animal Sounds, is Loni Townsend. Congratulations, Loni!

Second, I had one more question from the Outstanding Blogger post.  I'll answer it now.  The question was:  What is your favorite piece to play?   Another tough one.  Since we were talking about piano repertoire, I'm going to select a piano piece.  (If I had to choose a violin piece or viola piece, I don't think I'd ever be able to do it!)  I really enjoy playing the Chopin Valse brillant in Ab Major.  It has both virtuoso passages and lyrical passages, which I think is a great combination.

Here's Lang Lang playing it:

And now for the story:

I took my ten-year-old son to the park yesterday.  He had a special request to visit the playground.  He went on the swing set and the spinning thing that makes you want to vomit. He went down the sliding board, and dug up some dirt with the digger toy.  He even made a few friends with some of the kids.

When he was done, he came up to me and said, "Mama, I miss being younger."

"What do you mean, Bubba?  You're still pretty young."

"All these kids are five or six years old.  They don't have a care in the world.  Now I'm old. I have so much to think about."

"Like what, Bubba? Video games?"

He gave me a funny look.  "No, Mama.  Homework and chores."

Right.  All those big kid things.

I nodded.  "Well, Bubba.  You'd better enjoy being ten, because pretty soon you'll be forty, with a lot more to worry about than homework and chores!"

  2. I'm sorry I missed Virginia Wright post! Congrats to Loni!

Yup, when you get into the homework and chores phase of your childhood, you want to be back in Kindergarten again. Wait until he gets into his twenties. He'll wish he was ten and only had to deal with homework and chores. ;)

  12. I understand what he means though. Little kids just play, that's all. Bigger kids can still play but they start seeing that one day, they will be adults and won't get to anymore. At least, that's what I was like.

  15. I'm with Bubba, this adult thing is way overrated. In fact, I think I'd like to retreat back to the time of naps...

  21. Isn't it amazing how much we think we have to worry about when we are kids, when really homework and some chores seem like a dream as an adult. I guess it is all perspective! :)

Thanks for sharing your favorite piano piece with us.

  27. LOL! My 14 year old was lamenting the other day how he couldn't really get into MG books anymore because they were written for a younger mentality. I scratched my head and thought, "Well I still like MG books."

  29. I listen to my teenager grandkids and I think how easy they really have it compared to what's coming in life. Then I remember being a teenager. You know, each age carries it's own brand of stress.

  33. I've got this theory that people who can play the violin, viola, and the piano just have to be very very smart. What is your view on this theory of mine? I'm not kidding by the way.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that theory is correct. Learning music, makes smart people even smarter, because it develops so much of the brain. So the next question is, am I smart? Last time I was tested, my IQ was over 140, so I guess that makes me smart. ;0)

  34. I hope Bubba reevaluates being ten. Chores and homework aren't so bad. The music was beautiful. It takes a great deal of talent to play like that.
