Doing the Whip

The other day, I caught my daughter doing something very strange. She was standing, with her knees  bent, her arm extended in front of her, bouncing.

I watched her for two seconds. "What the heck are you doing?" I asked.

"The Whip," she explained.

"The what?"

"The Whip. It's a dance we all do in school. We had a flash mob doing it today."

"This is what you do in school?"

She nodded. "Do you want to know how to do it?"

I wasn't sure I did, but I figured if I knew how, it would make me slightly cooler than I already am.

She demonstrated. "Stand with your legs apart and knees bent. Then pull your arm back and thrust it straight out. Bounce and move your arm slowly to the side."

I did it.

She laughed. "Mom, you look silly!"

"Girlfriend, I think anyone doing this would look silly!" I retorted. "Even the Macarena was better than this!"

She wasn't sure about that.

So, ladies and gentlemen, if you want to be cool, learn the latest dance that the youth of our nation are doing. Here's a demonstration by some fine costumed individuals:

Note:  The lyrics of the tune they dance to, are not exactly "G" rated, so if profanity bothers you, don't watch!

    1. I searched everywhere for a Whip video without profanity. There wasn't one. This was the least offensive one.

  4. Couldn't watch the vid. But hope you didn't injure yourself trying this. My daughters used to do moves that felt like the game of twister to me.

    1. Too bad. Maybe we should bring some of our American flash mobs to inspire y'all.

  8. I would injure my knees and perhaps some other body parts. I'll confine myself to a gentle twist and the swim.

  10. I love the characters doing this and thanks for keeping us updated with the trends. I'm so lost. This is such a workout, it reminds me a squats. haha...I do prefer Gangnam Style over this. :))

  13. I'm not sure about that dance. Baby Ruth (3) does the cutest little dance to Meagan Trainer's "All About that Bass". First she starts rocking on her heels and then she starts adding in some booty shake and arm movements. She's in that stage where you pull out the camera and she stops. I'd love to get a video of her and post it!

  21. I agree with Susan that it looks like they're pretending to ride a horse. I can only imagine what crazy dance crazes they'll have when my little guy is in school. I'm a little afraid!
