Scorpion Extermination

"Mom!" my teenage daughter shouted as she ran downstairs. "There's a scorpion in my bathroom!"

I looked at the girl. "Where?"

"In my bathroom!"

"I got that part. Where in your bathroom? The sink? The floor? The bathtub?"

"Floor!"

"All right," I said. "I'll take a look at it."

Sure enough, there was a one and a half inch long scorpion sitting in the middle of the floor. It was very much alive, and it had its tail pointed up.

"Hmmm," I said. "Let me find some bug spray." There was no way I was going to try to do the pick-it-up-with-toilet-paper trick with that thing.

I looked in all the cupboards, and couldn't find any. Then I went out to the garage. I found a gallon of commercial insecticide that we had used to spray the outside of our house. Armed with the poison, I went back upstairs to her bathroom.

I was about to spray the thing, when my daughter stopped me. "Wait, Mom! You need shoes. Scorpions can sting you."

I looked at the little creature and shrugged.  "I don't have any shoes up here."

"I do," she said, and handed me a pair of her fuzzy bunny slippers.

"Really?" I asked.

She nodded. "Put them on."

I put on the bunny slippers and activated the insecticide. In no time at all, the scorpion was covered in poison.

My daughter then ran downstairs and got a glass from the kitchen. She came back. "Cover it with this," she said.

I walked very carefully over to the scorpion, in my bunny slippers, and covered it with the glass.

"All right," I said. "Mission accomplished."

And that, ladies and gentlemen is how you exterminate a scorpion.

  2. I don't have bunny slippers, so I guess I'd be screwed.
When I lived in Arizona, we found scorpions in the house on more than one occasion.

    1. You'd definitely need a pair of bunny slippers for the job. If you have scorpions where you live, you should invest in a pair! ;0)

  3. Glad there are none of those here. Plus I too don't have bunny slippers lol

  4. I used to have bunny slippers. I miss those days. I wonder if we have scorpions here. I've never seen one. Bug spray is worthless with a palmetto bug.

    1. I used to hate the palmetto bugs in Florida! They'd come out and night and scurry around in the kitchen sink.

  5. Great story (but a little overkill from the Scorpion's POV)!

    1. Definitely a little overkill. But I hope it enjoyed the bunny slippers staring it in the face before it died.

  6. Hi, Sherry! A few years ago Mrs. Shady got a t-shirt out of the dryer and slipped it over her head. Suddenly, she felt a sharp pain in the middle of her back. It turned out to be a scorpion that stung her while clinging to the inside of the shirt! Mrs. S. screamed bloody murder. We caught the critter in a mason jar and disposed of it in the nearby woods. She called the hospital and asked how poisonous and dangerous the sting was and they advised her that it was nothing to worry about given the small size of the scorpion. That same year I reached into a clump of Spanish moss in a tree and got bit or stung by something, either a scorpion or a black widow spider. I had a severe reaction. My whole arm swelled up and I suffered for days, keeping the site submerged in a bucket of ice water. I don't want to go through misery like that ever again! I'm glad you and your daughter avoided a similar fate.

    1. I'm glad you survived your bite. That had to be awful!

I'm glad your wife was okay, too. That had to be scary! I'd probably have a heart attack if that happened to me.

    1. Generally, I don't like to kill insects. I'd rather transport them outside. But, I wasn't going to mess with a scorpion!

  8. oh that is scary story. Fortunately the creature hasn't caused any harm to your family.

  12. Thankfully not something we have to deal with here though funnily enough there have been numerous reports of them being found in bananas.

    1. Ewww. I've heard of tarantulas in bananas, but not scorpions. Either one would freak me out, though!

  14. Eeeekk!! There are tons of scorpions here in Egypt and thank goodness I've never seen a one. I don't think I could deal with it. Oddly, I'm okay with spiders, and we get little lizards in the house, but there are these giant cockroaches that come out every summer. I make hubby kill them - or if he's away, I run after the the beast with a shoe in hand, yelling and pounding. I'm sure all my neighbors think I'm crazy. When it comes to bugs, they'd be right.

    1. I bet your scorpions would be a lot bigger than the ones we have in Georgia. I wouldn't want to see one, either. Cockroaches - yuck! I'd be going after them with a shoe, too!

  15. Nooooo! Why didn't you just throw it out alive? Can those kill?

    1. They sting! It's like trying to get a wasp and put it outside. Some bugs you just can't save. (No, this one was too small to kill. I think the bigger ones cause a lot of pain and swelling.)

  17. Thankfully, I've never had to deal with a real life scorpion. I imagine once we move out into the middle of nowhere, that will be the least of my bug problems haha
Congrats of successfully ridding of it! I usually try to catch and release, but I probably would've done the same in this situation!

    1. I don't like scorpions! You have to check your shoes before you put them on to make sure one is not hiding in there!

  18. That was a scary experience for both of you. Yikes, I don't think I've ever seen one, thankfully.
