Thirsty Dog

As I was coming down the stairs yesterday evening, I heard a slurping sound. It was coming from the bathroom. I wondered what it could be.

Curious, I entered the said room to investigate. Who do you think I saw?

You guessed it. Our hundred pound German Shepherd. He was standing at the toilet, in the dark, slurping up water.

"Schultz!" I yelled. "What do you think you're doing?"

He stopped and looked at me. Toilet water dripped off his jowls.

"That's disgusting, Schultz!"  I didn't know who to be more upset with - my dog, or my son, who obviously left the toilet seat up. Again.  I looked in the toilet. He had drank almost all of it. I shook my head.  "Go drink your water from your bowl."

He walked past me and went to where his water bowl should have been. It wasn't there.

Then I remembered. The water bowl was in the dishwasher.

I guess a thirsty dog has to do what a thirsty dog has to do!

  1. Poor Schultz. But I would probably have yelled at him too:) The worst part is that after he drank water out of the toilet, he will come and kiss you with that toilet breath:)

  2. What did you expect him to do - turn on the faucet?

  3. I just hope the toilet had been flushed - my smallest one isn't good at doing that!

    1. I think it was flushed, but I'm not 100 percent sure. My boy has been know to forget to flush.

  4. My dog does that, too. It is disgusting!

  5. Poor little Schultz. My son's dog, Stella, drinks out of the toilet. He adopted a puppy. The puppy learned from Stella about drinking out of the toilet. I think all they do over there is drink out of the toilet, including my son.

  7. Wow, I've owned dogs all my life, but never knew the whole drinking-out-of-the-toilet thing was an actual thing that could happen with them. Silly Schultz, embracing doggy stereotypes like that! XD

    1. Your toilet seats are probably all down. If you kept them up, this would happen to you.

  8. I hear the water in the toilet bowl tends to be cooler, which is why the dogs seek it out.

    1. That makes sense. It couldn't be because it tastes better. ;0)

  9. Hi, dear Sherry!

My Cocker Spaniel Toto actually preferred to drink from the toilet, even after I put fresh clean water in her bowl! It must be a dog thing. By the way, your son did nothing wrong. Take it from me, Shady Del Knight. The toilet seat rule is the same as it is for the tray table on an airplane. After use it should always be returned to its full upright position (for the convenience of the men in the house. :) When you got Schultz's bowl out of the dishwasher I hope you rinsed all of those soap bubbles out of it. :)

    1. Haha! Yes, the soap bubbles are gone. But I have to disagree about your toilet seat theory. That might work for men, but it's not good for an absent minded woman who wants to use the facilities and ends up with a wet bottom on account of the raised toilet seat. ;0)

  11. Oh dear, hope your pet didn't get his tummy upset. Thank goodness my Shih Tzu isn't tall enough to reach the toilet bowl. Lol! That's hilarious, Sherry! xoxo

  13. ewww both on Schultzie drinking from the toilet bowl and on his bowl being in the dishwasher :) Hope there weren't any of the bathroom cleaning chemicals in the toilet.

    1. No. It wasn't cleaning day, so I'm sure there weren't any harmful chemicals in there. He doesn't like the smell of cleaning supplies, so I'm sure he wouldn't drink water that contained any.

  15. Poor dog, must have been really thirsty. What else could he do?

  16. Good thing it was only water in the toilet. Dogs will be dogs.

    1. Fortunately, we have never caught our cat drinking from the toilet. He's much more civilized.

  18. So funny. I have a cat (Traveler) that prefers drinking from the toilet rather than his bowl.

  20. This is why I'm glad I have 5-10 lb dogs; they can't reach the toilet bowl. Dogs are already plenty gross without adding toilet water cocktails on top of that.

  21. I don't think dogs care much where the water comes from. :) At least the dogs I have known.

    1. They're not thinking about what has passed through the toilet. Even if they did, they probably wouldn't care.

  22. My cat refuses to drink from he dish, I have to have cups of water all over or she will drink from the toilet... eww... She seems happy with the cups for now. You are right though, a dog has to do what a dog has to do... xox
