Question of the Month and Banana Phone

It's time for Question of the Month hosted by Michael D'Agostino. Actually, it's past time. I'm late again. Oh well. The question is, "Have you ever had to make a difficult decision which you didn't want to do, but you knew it was for the best?"

The answer is, yes. I've actually had to make quite a few of them. One of the more recent was during my move from Ohio to Georgia about three years ago. I was the president-elect of the Ohio String Teacher's Association. My term as president was supposed to begin just as I was leaving. I was looking forward to serving as president, and I had a lot of big plans. I could've done it from Georgia, but it would have been a challenge. So I decided to step down and let someone else who lived in Ohio take the position. It was very disappointing for me, but I knew it was for the best.

Have you ever had to make any difficult decisions like that?

Now for the story:

I was sitting at the dinner table when I heard a cell phone ring. It didn't sound like mine. A few seconds later, my son came into the kitchen.

"Mama, you have a call."

I turned around, and found my son holding a rather peculiar looking phone. It was yellow and shaped like a familiar fruit. But it had writing on it.

"Dude," I said. "What's this?"

"A banana phone. You'd better answer it."

So I did. And I had a nice conversation with the monkey on the other end.

  2. Hopefully you can share your plans with a similar group in Georgia. Bubba has a vivid imagination. Makes me wonder what he will invent during his lifetime.

  5. Funny Bubba. He will always keep you laughing. Moves almost always lead to difficult decisions. I'm sorry you had to give up your position.

  6. Now you've gone and done it. Banana Phone by Raffi will be going through my head all night.

"Ring, ring, ring, ring, ring, ring, banana phone ..."

It's been years since that song was playing on repeat in the car, but now it's allllll coming back to me!

  7. Out of respect, I will not sing the banana phone song. That aside, I'm sorry you had to give up your position. Sometimes life throws us hardballs. :(

  8. Wouldn't it have been strange if there really was a monkey on the other end?

  9. Your son certainly has a sense of humour which is not a bad thing. Sorry about your decision I think we all have to make choices in our lives.

  11. Hi Sherry,
Bubba never ceases to amaze me with his brilliant mind. I love the banana phone idea. And you would have made a great president in Ohio. You are so driven and passionate about your music and your writing. Hmm...perhaps you should run for President of the United States next time around. :-)

  13. Hi, Sherry!

Yessum, I faced a difficult decision in the early 80s regarding my career. I could stay where I was in a middle management position at a television station in the #41 size market in the country, or I could accept the challenge of working in a larger metro area. Leaving town and leaving the state meant leaving behind all of my friends and family and starting over, but that's what I did. I landed a producer job at a station in the #11 ranked market and never looked back.

Bubba's phone will come in handy if your family ever lives in a banana republic. :) Let's hope America doesn't turn into one! :(

    1. I'm glad your job change worked out! Yes, I'm worried about what's going to happen to our country after this election. Can't say I'm excited about either candidate.

  14. It must've been hard for you to leave such a promising opportunity. We all have choices like that and it's hard to be confident that you made the right decision.
The banana phone is very cute. :)

    1. I think it would have been tough to run the organization from out of state. It's better to be local.

  15. Sounds like that move came up when you least expected it. As they do from time to time.

At least you weren't asked to talk into a cell phone cover. I've seen kids do that (just to fake me out, usually).

    1. Yes, it was a fast move. Found out we were moving, and three months later, we were gone.

  16. Life seems to find a lot of those kinds of decisions to test out on us. Loved the banana phone! Can't imagine what the monkey had to say.

  17. LOL, Bubba has the best imagination. And that's a shame how you had to give up your position as president. Difficult decisions like that are unavoidable sometimes, unfortunately...

  18. I actually want a phone like that! A shame that things don't always match up in terms of timing. I think it was noble to let someone else have the chance.

  19. I think every one of us has had to make difficult decisions, I'm sorry you had to step down. That story about the phone is hilarious though!

  20. That does sound like a difficult decision! I am sure it was very hard to step away from something you wanted to so much.

The banana phone sounds funny! Loved the picture. :)
