Scaring Away the Ghosts

My kids are convinced our house is haunted. I have to admit, sometimes I wonder. We've had shutters open by themselves, loud knocking on doors when nobody is around, and a sense of seeing something out of the corner of our eyes when nothing is there.

My daughter decided to do something about it. The other day she came home with this:

"What the heck is that?" I asked. I was concerned it might be some kind of drug.

"Sage," she answered.

"And what exactly are you going to do with it?"

"Burn it. Sage gets rid of ghosts."

Okay.

So, the girl lit an end of it on fire and walked around the house, letting the smoke fill the air.

Let me tell you, that thing stunk!

I couldn't believe how bad it smelled after her little ritual.

"Well," I said. "I don't think anything is going to live here now. Including us!"

(I'm happy to report that we haven't had any more strange occurrences. So maybe it worked.)

Do you believe in ghosts? Do you think sage gets rid of them?

  1. I guess ghosts don't like sage. Just hope the smell didn't linger too long for you.

  2. Hi, Sherry!

I looked it up in my Funk and Wagnalls, dear friend, and you might have a problem. Seems sage is the ghostly equivalent of marijuana, and burning the stuff in the house is tantamount to throwing a pot party for the restless spirits. :) My "sage advice" is for you guys to start wearing garlic clove pendants. :)

I don't believe in ghosts but I would welcome the opportunity to meet one and learn from him or her.

Thanks for the amusing story, dear friend Sherry, and enjoy the rest of your week!

  3. How scary Sherry. I'm glad I don't have any ghostly things happening.

  4. you just need to leave bread crumbs every night for hobgoblins and they will keep away the ghosts.

    1. Oh. Okay. Hobgoblins sound like the ladybugs of the spirit world. :)

  5. Ah yes, I'm familiar with the sage thing. It's also to clear out old (bad) energy.

  6. Sure will make you appreciate the normal smells more at the very least.

  7. I don't believe in ghosts, although I hear strange noises in the house sometimes. It usually turns out to be Penelope playing with a toy.

  9. Aw, sage. Can't remember a time where I wasn't aware of that trick. (Was obsessed with all things paranormal as a kid, haha.) Glad it has seemed to put a stop to the ghostly strangeness over there!

  10. I do believe in ghosts, as far as whether or not sage gets rid of them, I do not know. It's certainly a fun story nonetheless. - Katie

  11. That's a new one on me. I'll remember her sage advice if I ever have to perform an exorcism! Sorry - couldn't help that.

  12. Oh, I love the smell of burning sage. I think my current ones are a mix of sage & cedar and sage & sweetgrass but I have had plain sage, too. I don't know if smudge sticks works for ghosts. The smoke is supposed to help get rid of negative energy so what the heck. Maybe it will get rid of negative ghosts. ;)

    1. You love the smell of burning sage? Wow! Can't say I'm a fan. But if it gets rid of bad energy, then I'm okay with it once in a while.

    2. Maybe because I usually buy mine combined with sweet grass or cedar and that makes it smell nice. ;)

  13. I use to burn sage all the time! The Native Indians use it as a smudging to clear the soul. Also, many of times, when you buy a home, people do smudge their home first. The reason I stopped, is because I'm allergic to sage! LOL! Sometimes I burn it outside. Keeps the bugs away! I love to burn sweetgrass. If you have ghosts, let them be. Maybe they are friendly and will have a game of cards with you? LOL! Big Hugs!

    1. These ghosts were not friendly. Otherwise I would've left them alone. I think the sage worked. :)

  14. Well, I guess it couldn't hurt. Although there are some intriguing correlations between ghost sightings in homes and gas leaks...something to check into.

    1. Hmmm. We have detectors, but it wouldn't hurt to double check. Thanks for the tip.

  16. Hmm, not convinced by ghosties and ghoulies and other long-legged beasties. I have heard sage works but, if not, I have any other number of things I have been told help.

  19. Ha—yep, that burnt-sage smell would definitely get rid of me if I were a ghost (and maybe even if I wasnt, hehe). No, I don't really go for supernatural stuff, but... well, it can't hurt, right? ;)

Thanks for visiting Michelle's IWSG post for my bit on nonfiction; glad you enjoyed it!
