The Wild Deer Chase

We have quite a few deer living in the woods behind our house.  They make an appearance every morning.  Usually, it's rather uneventful. They eat their leaves and retreat into the forest.   Not this morning.  This morning it was massive chaos, because this morning, our crazy German Shepherd, Schultz, decided it would be a lot of fun to chase the deer.

I took him out at six o'clock in the morning, when it was still dark, to do his business.  Unbeknownst to me, the entire herd was grazing in my backyard. Schultz spotted them immediately.  There was no way I could hold the hundred pound beast back.

He charged.  I heard the deer scatter.  He chased them into the woods.  And out.

"Schultz!" I bellowed as two deer ran past me.

Schultz was in hot pursuit of another one.  The deer came toward me and quickly swerved when she spotted me.

"Schultz, come!"

Fortunately, the beast is a well-trained creature.  He skidded to a stop.  The deer ran off to who-only-knows where, and Schultz followed me into the house, with a big doggy grin and his tongue nearly dragging on the ground.

Crazy dog!

  1. Sweet! Schultz sounds like so much fun! We have a duck pond in our neighborhood. My cat thinks it can take one down every time they waddle into our cul de sac, and every time they manage to quak and flap till he runs.

  2. I have a stubborn, willful Bluetick Beagle. He is far from trained and goes on "hunts" at the worst times of night. I have to chase him down in my jammies at least a few days a week.

  6. What if one had bolted past you and into the house? Now that would've been nuts!

    1. Then the cat would've got it. And that would've been really bad for the deer! ;0)

  10. I've heard of deer crashing through windows and going wild in houses. They are beautiful, but so dangerous. Please be careful on the roads. I never hit a deer, but one hit me once and it was terrifying.

    Janie

    1. I am well aware of the dangers of deer - especially at night. I've know many people who've hit one, and it didn't go well for anybody!

  12. Schultz has all types of fun. He seems like a lot to handle, though. Lovable, too.

  13. It's so good he's well-trained and responsive. The deer will live to eat another day and Schultz will have many sweet dreams.

  16. Yikes, that must have been an exciting adventure. Schultz must have wanted to start your day off with something memorable. D We have had deer in our yard as well, but only a mom and baby, usually. Once we had twin babies and their mom. They were so cute.

  17. Aaaaand I continue to love the Schultz stories. You write him so clearly; his whole personality just jumps off of the page (and onto the deer!)

    1. Ha! Thanks. I really should write some Schultz books. I think kids would like them.

  18. I wonder if the deer will consider coming back to your yard? Perhaps Schultz scared them off for good. I guess only time will tell.

  19. Hey, at least he was having fun. =) I think sometimes we forget what dogs and kids know so well--that we just have to let loose and have fun sometimes.
