Our hundred pound German Shepherd's favorite toy is a rubber squeaky ball. He runs around all day with that thing in his mouth, squeaking away. I find it incredibly annoying, but since the dog enjoys it so much, I let him play with it.
Well, the other day, Schultz broke the squeaker.
Good, I thought. Less noise!
Apparently Schultz did not share my sentiments. He ran around with the ball, dropped it, and stared at me, wondering what the heck was wrong with his toy. He did the same thing with my husband. When he didn't get a reaction from either of us, he shoved the ball in a corner and lay down on the ground, looking completely dejected.
My husband saw how sad the poor beast was. "We really should get him a new squeaky ball."
I looked at the dog. "I suppose."
So that's what we did. We went to the pet store and got Schultz a brand new squeaky ball. Needless to say, when we presented the new toy, Schultz was delighted.
He grabbed that ball and resumed the noise making. And he's still doing it. Too bad it doesn't have an off switch!
I have heard that there are some toys that do have a off switch, but he would just be sad every time you did.
ReplyDeleteYou're probably right!
DeleteI feel kind of depressed as well. Getting a squeaky ball sounds brilliant..

Maybe I'll send you one and you can play with it. ;0)
DeleteHe's playing you music, you just don't recognize the dog classics.
ReplyDeleteIs that what it is? I have a canine maestro? LOL!
DeleteHA!!
ReplyDeleteMy mentally challenged French Poodle, Thumper (Bless his soul) would get a new squeaky toy and immediately go to trying to destroy it...
It would keep him occupied for hours. Upon destruction, he would come and drop it at your feet and have this expression of "next??"
~shoes~
our dogs train us well! Funny story.
ReplyDeleteYes, they do. It's funny how much they say through body language!
DeleteYou're good parents. This story reminded me of Faulkner's first Christmas with us when I gave him a squeaky ball and some treats.. He was so excited about his gifts.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
It's funny how excited Schultz gets over little things, like a squeaky ball!
DeleteI know, it can be rather annoying...but after all...he is a member of your family.
ReplyDeleteYes, he is. We have to meet all his needs - even his noisy ones!
DeleteI wonder what does your cat think about all of this?
ReplyDeleteHe stays outside - away from all the mayhem!
DeleteOh, I so empathize. We have two pups who love their squeaking toys. The louder, the better!
ReplyDeleteIt can create quite a din!
DeleteThe noise seems to make them want to do it all the more haha
ReplyDeleteYou should see how proud he is when he makes that thing squeak! It's ridiculous!
DeleteLOL Dogs definitely know how to manipulate us. :)
ReplyDeleteThey're experts!
DeleteAw, poor Schultz, but at least he has a new toy to entertain him now! (And poor you, since that new toy isn't quiet in the slightest...)
ReplyDeleteI need to find some ear plugs! ;0)
DeleteSo adorable! I can't imagine the state of that ball. My brother in law in France has a German Shepherd who loves to play with this saliva drenched tennis ball. He's fond of coming back to me repeatedly to throw it so he can chase after it. One time, I threw it so far, it landed on the neighbor's garden at the other side of the fence. He was so frustrated for having lost the ball. The poor thing kept searching for it and was depressed for not being able to find it.
ReplyDeletePoor dog! We don't ever give Schultz tennis balls. The vet said those aren't good for German Shepherds because they can destroy them easily and choke on the bits and pieces. I bet your brother-in-law's dog would like a squeaky ball!
DeleteHave to keep him happy
ReplyDeleteHi Sherry,
ReplyDeleteIndy was very proud of your for buying Shultz-y a new ball. :-)
Sounds like Schultz is a happy dog again. Our cockier spaniel had a squeaky toy that quit squeaking once he poked a tooth through the hard plastic. Haven't had a chance to get to Pet Smart to get him a new one. He's overdue for a haircut, so I'll probably get him a new squeaky toy then.
ReplyDeleteGlad Schultz is cheerful again, even though his squeaky ball is working overtime. Maybe he can give a concert with it,since he practices so much! Elliott has a big rope ball that used to have two braids attached to it, but he untied them! We cut them off so now he has a giant rope ball. When we got him the small rope balls, he untied the whole thing! A very special talent, don't you think?
