Yesterday, my son had a little accident with his scooter and broke his wrist. He's now sporting a cast and sling. Needless to say, it's a little tough for him to do basic things, like get dressed and write his name.
"Mama, I need a little help here," he said.
"What do you need, Bubba?"
"Help getting my shirt on." We struggled at least five minutes, trying to get it on. Finally, his arm was through the sleeve.
"Mama, is this how it is for pirates?"
I looked at the boy a little funny. "What do you mean?"
"Like Captain Hook. He had a hook instead of a hand. And Long John Silver. He had a peg instead of a leg. They must've had a hard time getting dressed!"
"Well, Bubba, I hadn't really thought of it, but now that you mention it, they probably did have a hard time. "
A few minutes later, my boy had to sign a birthday card for one of his friends. I looked at the chicken scratch when he was done. It looked like more than his name, but I couldn't figure out what it said, because it was so illegible.
"Dude, what are you trying to say, here?"
"It's my name, Mama: Bubba, the one-armed pirate!"
Arr! Now of course he will want a parrot.
ReplyDeleteOh no! Another animal for the collection! LOL!
DeleteHahaha! That is SO cute! He's adorable, and it's wonderful he's empathetic to others who face challenges. You must be a great momma. :)
ReplyDeleteI try. He's just a great kid!
DeleteHe's a tough little cookie, and very sweet. Imagine .. he broke his wrist but is able to think of others too!! :)
ReplyDeleteHe knows how to 'empathize'. A reminder to us all :-)
It's amazing where his mind goes!
DeleteSorry about his wrist! At least he's looking on the bright side and having fun with it.
ReplyDeleteYes. He has a very upbeat personality.
Deletewhenever somebody breaks his/hers arm or wrist I always wonder how do they wipe their bum after that? :) It's a legit question :)
ReplyDeleteHahaha! You would wonder that! Apparently he seems to be doing okay with it. ;0)
DeleteI'm sorry about his wrist. I hope it heals up soon. I had the same thought as David! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not going to let him read this, or he's going to get ideas of going to the pet store and getting a feathered friend!
DeleteDid he get a colored cast?
ReplyDeleteNot yet. It's just all wrapped up from the emergency room. We still have to visit the orthopedic doctor. I'm sure he'll have a cast. He wants a blue or red one.
DeleteFun that they do colors.
DeleteI love his outlook. When our boys were little, we overheard them talking about wanting to be the "toughest" pirate, with TWO hooks and TWO eyepatches and TWO peg legs. All we could picture was that pirate clattering his way across the deck, back and forth...
ReplyDeleteLet's just hope Bubba doesn't want two broken wrists!
DeleteOh Sherry I do hope he is ok. it's awkward when an arm, wrist or hand is injured,
ReplyDeleteYvonne.
He's tough. I'm sure he'll be fine.
DeleteYour son sounds adorable! Sorry about his wrist!
ReplyDeleteHe certainly has a positive outlook, even when life is handing him some lemons!
DeleteHopefully the wrist heals quick. At least he is still in good har har spirits
ReplyDeleteThat he is. (Although he wasn't in such good spirits when it first happened!)
DeleteIf your son is anything like mine, he is proud of his cast. When they told my son his arm wasn't broken, he was disappointed. Just recently a bike pedal made some serious wounds on his leg that needed stitches. He couldn't wait to show everyone and he was 12. I love the stories of your children and glad I found this blog as one of MJ's techs. This is one I am really going to enjoy.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you've stopped by! I'll have to check out your blog.
DeleteSorry about Bubba's wrist! I had broken mine when I was a kid, and it definitely wasn't fun. Love his piratey outlook, though--so cute!
ReplyDeleteLeave it to him to come up with that!
DeleteHe turns every situation, whether positive or negative, into a moment of wonder and learning...
ReplyDeleteLet's face it... those pirates MUST have had a hard time getting dressed! He has a valid point!
Writer In Transit
They probably didn't do it often, since there weren't many laundry mats when they were out at sea! (Can you just imagine how bad they smelled?)
DeleteCan't say I've given much thought to how a pirate gets dressed either, good point, Bubba! Hope the wrist heals quickly.
ReplyDeleteYou have to thing of these things. They're important details! ;0)
DeleteAt least he's got a great attitude about it! Happy healing to him~
ReplyDeleteHopefully he won't be in a cast too long!
DeleteToo bad there's no RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR in Bubba.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's how my mind works.
Hahaha! You just crack me up!
DeleteArrrr, matey! Nicely done.
ReplyDeleteThat's my pirate boy!
DeleteMaybe he can replace Depp in the next Pirate's movie haha.
ReplyDeleteOh, brother. I heard Depp remains in character even when he's not acting. I couldn't imagine living with a crazy pirate boy if he got the job!
DeleteYour little guy has such a wonderful perspective on life... and a great sense of humor!
ReplyDeleteThat he does!
DeleteArrrrrgh, Bubba!
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Ay, Matey!
DeletePoor Bubba! Hope his wrist is feeling okay, but lots of things must be a bit of a challenge. This might be one of those time when he would find a cloned mama really helpful! Speedy recovery to Bubba.
ReplyDeleteHe's doing well. This is the last day for the strong pain killers, so hopefully Motrin will work just fine until it's completely healed.
DeleteBubba, I am sorry to hear you broke your wrist. I hope Mama spoils you while you heal. :-)
ReplyDeleteMama spoil the boy? Not a chance! ;0)
DeleteThat's something I never thought of. That's kids for you
ReplyDeleteThey certainly have a different perspective!
DeleteOh no!! I hope it's not keeping him down too much. His sense of humor is definitely still intact! lol!
ReplyDeleteThere's not much that can dampen his sense of humor!
DeleteI need help getting dressed on most days and my wrists/hands are fine. No wonder pirates are so mean and grumpy.
ReplyDeleteHaha! That explains everything!
DeleteToo cute! Hope he heals up quickly!
ReplyDeleteHe's young. I'm sure he'll be healed up in no time!
