Giveaway and D'ya Gotta Bay?

Product DetailsYesterday, my blog buddy, Tara Tyler, came to Atlanta to do a book signing for her awesome book, Pop Travel. Naturally, I had to stop by and see her.  It's always great to see a blog friend in person!  Since I already have her awesome book, I decided to do a giveaway for her on my blog.  So, if you would like a chance to win a free, autographed copy of Pop Travel, please leave a comment below.  I'll pick a winner on Monday.

Now for the story:

I was driving my teenage daughter when she started singing rap music.  I looked over at her and shook my head. "What the heck are you saying?"

She repeated it.

"Sorry," I said. "I still don't understand.  Would you please slow it down a bit?"

After several tries, I finally got it:  "D'ya Gotta Bay?"

"Do you have a bay?" I translated. "What does that mean?  Do you have a horse?"

My daughter looked at me and laughed.  "No, Mom, it doesn't mean that.  You're so silly!"

I tried again.  "Do you have a large body of water?"

She shook her head. "Mom, don't you know what a bay is?"

"No.  Apparently after over forty years of living on this planet, I have no idea what a bay is."

"It's a boyfriend!"

Oh.  Right.  A horse boyfriend.

(I think I'm going to have to relearn the English language if I'm going to be able to communicate with my daughter for the next six years!)

  2. HA! Horse boyfriend. These are the times when it's preferable to sing along phonetically.

  3. Oooh. How exciting. I have been wanting to read Pop Travel for a LONG TIME. You are giving away an autographed copy.... that is amazing!!! **crossing fingers***

Oh my oh my oh my. I like to think that I keep up with the lingo, even though I don't care for it, but I had NO CLUE what a bay was. A horse boyfriend or Waterman (no relation to Aquaman). Bay = Boyfriend. Noted. This scares me for the future.

  4. Did you ask her if she had Swag? I am not ready for the teenage years yet!

  5. As soon as you learn teen-speak, they will change it. The point is to NOT have the parents understand.

  6. This makes me a little worried for the teenage years. I have no idea how I'll be able to communicate. LOL

  10. so does she have a bay? :)

It's so nice that you met a blogging friend. Bloggers become parts of each other's lives even though they usually never meet in real life.

    1. No. She's too young for a bay!

I wish we could meet in real life - like at some kind of blogger convention. But yes, we certainly can be friends even if we never see each other in the "real" world.

  11. I used to sing along to Favorite Young Man's music. I couldn't understand the words, so I sang whatever popped into my head. He was irritated, but ended up laughing.

    Love,
Janie, who has a bay named Willy Dunne Wooters

  12. I would have never guessed "bay" was boyfriend. Cute story. That was nice of you to offer a book giveaway for your blog buddy--great photo of you at the book signing too! I wish her all the best with Pop Travel. Have you heard Jennifer Lopez's new song, I Luh Ya Papi? The other night I watched her perform it on TV, for the life of me I could not understand what she was saying--but then I heard her say," I Love You Papi."

    1. Thanks, Virginia!

Yes, I have a hard time understanding the lyrics of a lot of pop songs today. I must be getting old! ;0)

  13. What an awesome giveaway, and how cool that you got to see Tara in person!

And...bay means "boyfriend"? That's news to me! I would've assumed a large body of water, just like you...

  14. Great giveaway! I had no idea bay meant boyfriend. I need to brush up on this slang for when my little guy is older... but it'll all be different in five and ten years!

How awesome that you got to attend a book signing for a blogging buddy. Yeah! I have heard great things about Pop Travel. Thanks for a chance to win. :)

  17. Thank you for the giveaway. I've had my eye on this book.

I thought bay meant baby. I hear many teenagers use that term for boy and girlfriends.

  18. Cute story. Our children can make us look so stupid, especially when they are teenagers.

  20. I was looking for your A-Z theme, couldn't find it, but loved your posts and will keep visiting.

My A-Z theme, ‘26 Positive Takes on Life’ will generally focus on positive, truly heart-warming, real-life incidents involving ordinary persons whom we can all emulate.

I grew up in the 1970's and face this situation with new words, texting spellings, etc. that are popular with younger people. I guess it's just part of the 'generation gap'.

    1. Yeah. I didn't post my theme. Mostly because I have a mommy brain. My theme will be words/stories related to my life as a mom.

  21. Yep, bay (spelled bae) is the shortened version of baby, because teens can't be bothered to pronounce extra letters. Apparently bae stands for Before Anyone Else.

Look at me, staying current with the kids.

    1. Oh. Thank you so much for clarifying that. I couldn't understand where in the world, "bay" came from!

  22. Never heard of that. I've got only three years before teenager-dom invades the household. Maybe I'll pretend to be deaf.
