Master Gardener

It's that time of year when gardening begins.  This year, I've started a lot of vegetable plants from seed. Usually, I just buy the plant from the nursery and shove it into the ground.  But I happen to have some wonderful heirloom tomato, pepper, and squash seeds I wanted to try, so I'm doing things differently.

I purchased some seed germination kits and planted my seeds.  Since the weather had not been so great, I kept them in the house. But yesterday, I decided to put them on the deck, in an inconspicuous place, so they could get some sun.   Bad idea.

Mr. Nose, aka our German Shepherd named Schultz, found them.  And of course he had to give them a big sniff. Unfortunately, that was not all he did.  He wanted to find what he was sniffing. By the time I discovered it, the dirt was all over the deck.

"Schultz!" I bellowed. "What did you do?"

He looked at the dirt. And then he looked at me. Then he stuck his nose in the dirt and uncovered a squash seed. He did a little wag of the tail. Apparently he thought he was a good boy for finding the seed.

I just shook my head.  "Oy gewalt, dog!  Next time leave the gardening to me!"

  1. Our dogs always liked to dig things up. Hope you can keep him away from your garden.

  2. Sounds familiar! - when we had a dog growing up he loved to dig.. loved 'gardening'
Impressive - growing from seed.. i usually plant the plants, but i suspect its even more rewarding growing from seed.. good stuff! If your dog will allow :)

    1. I'm hoping the little upset didn't hurt the seeds. They hadn't started to germinate, yet.

  3. We used to have a dog and always dug up what my husband planted. Great read, Sherry,

    1. Schultz dug up our rose garden in Cincinnati. I have no idea why he'd want to mess with something with thorns!

    2. knowing cats it's not crazy to think that the cat came up with the plot in the first place!

  7. Oh, yes. Dogs are notorious for digging where you don't want them to dig.

  8. Nice little helper you have there. Good luck with your garden. Are you going to replant seeds or just get some seedlings to get started?

    1. I'm going to attempt to replant the seeds, but if they don't come up, I'll have to go to the nursery and get plants.

  10. Some help is the kind of help we could do without! Hopefully you were able to replant the seeds and didn't lose any others. ;) I love having fresh produce from my own garden. So delicious!

  11. Ha-ha. What a sweetie. He meant well. I've been experimenting with seeds too. Check out my mini-greenhouses. I don't think Schultz could do any harm....but you never know.

  13. In my household, the dogs leave the veggies alone. But my cat? If I leave her out there for even a second she'll eat all of the plants. I know, a plant eating cat, how does that even work?

  14. Maybe Schultz thought he was making up for knocking the plant over by being such a good detective and finding it!

  15. I planted the garden a little over a week. It has been DIFFICULT keeping the dog out of it. I even put down red mulch so that the dirt would be less appealing. It has helped... some.. but she still wants to run through it to get to the back gate. Bad bad dog.
