The Cabbage Challenge

My son came home from school with a potted plant in his hand. "Here, Mama.  You need to keep this alive."

I looked at the boy and wrinkled my brows. "What do you mean I have to keep this alive?"

"It's a cabbage plant, and there's a contest at school to see who can keep their plant alive the longest and grow the biggest cabbage."

"Bubba," I said.  "I believe the challenge is for you to keep it alive.  Not me."

He made a frown face.  "But Mama, I'm not as experienced as you.  You're the Mama, and you take care of everything.  It's your job to keep things alive!"

(Uh.  Right.  Excuse me while I go consult my Mama Manual to see if it is my responsibility to keep school cabbages alive!)

  8. Mums definitely do it all :)
Handing you that plant was a great show of confidence.. I've seen many a houseplant wither under my care! I think I've learnt now :)

    1. It didn't take him long to figure out that flattery works - most of the time. But not this time!

  14. I think Bubba should do his best to keep the cabbage plant alive and not rely too much on your Mama magic! At least he knows where to go when he needs your magic touch.

    1. Right. There's already a lot on my plate. I don't need a cabbage on it, too!

  15. I think it's time to lob the ball, I mean cabbage, back into his court, I mean pot. I know you can do it... YOU'RE THE MAMA AFTER ALL. Just use that logic on him. I'm sure he'll get it. He is a smart little cuss.

  16. How wonderful that he believes you can do anything and he knows you can keep the cabbage alive. I think it will be great for him to try to keep it alive. Maybe you can tell him it won't be fair to the other kids if you use your magic to keep his cabbage alive. Then if he wins or loses he will know he tried his best. :) Good luck! He is so cute and persuasive. :)
