A Terrifying Thing

Last night, my daughter was sitting at the kitchen table doing her homework.  She happened to glance outside, and noticed our cat was doing something strange on the back deck.  "What's he doing?" she asked.

She got up and went out to investigate.

Three seconds later, she came back inside, not really sure what the cat had been doing.  As she stepped over the threshold, into the house, she happened to look down.  Something caught her attention.  She stooped down to pick it up, and then screamed.

Her eyes looked like saucers.  "Oh my God....Oh my God....Oh my God!!!!" she shrieked, as she stood there shaking.

"What's the matter?" I asked.

She pointed under one of our chairs by the center island in our kitchen.  "It's over there!"

"What is?" I asked as I went over to see what the heck had scared her so much.

I stooped down and noticed something green crawling up the island.  It was an insect.  A leaf bug.  And it was very big.

"That's what scared you?" I asked.  "A leaf bug?"

"I didn't know it was a bug.  I thought it was a leaf when I picked it up!"

"'Well, come here and look at it. It's just a bug."

She came over slowly, looked at it, and ran off to the other room.  "It's creepy!" she said.

I shrugged, got a glass, knocked it into the glass, and transported it back outside, where the cat could finish playing with it.

And that, ladies and gentlemen was the excitement at my house last night.

  1. Great story. Good thing insects don't creep you out. :)

    1. It would've been a little difficult to get the thing back outside if I had been creeped out, too!

  2. She probably scared the leaf bug half to death. They are big. And rather col for a bug.

  3. I thought it would turn out to be a snake. One time something gigantic flew into my house and hid behind the family room drapes. I called Favorite Young Man. He came over and said it was a giant locust. You just would not believe how big the locusts are here. They are the size of birds. FYM killed it with a magazine. We were both freaked out, but he was kind enough to do the dirty work.

  4. We're had a few really big spiders around this week. They have been freaky us out a bit! I'd swap them for a leaf bug!

  6. Bugs grow big in Georgia, I know. I don't like insects much if they are on my turf, they can count on the squish execution. I don't save them, nah. Brooms however work better on spiders.

Your daughter would not like a dress made with beetle pieces on Elise Fallson's blog then. . . it's a historical piece too.

    1. I did not see the dress on Elise's blog. That sounds disgusting! Who would wear a thing like that?

  8. The cat knows how to play. Probably play it to death so she will never see it again haha

    1. Yes. I don't know how long that leaf bug remained alive. I'm sure the cat found it, again.

  9. She was that scared of a leaf bug? Heaven forbid she sees the bugs in the desert. When I walk outside at night, spiders run at me on the concrete. I usually have on sandals because I never go anywhere except work.

  10. Wow, kind of cool actually. I'm getting used to bigger bugs as they come with the territory of being in warmer weather.
The weirdest bug thing I ever saw was a wolf spider performing his fancy mating dance on the living room floor in the light from the TV.

    1. That would be weird! It was probably more entertaining than what was on TV!

  14. I was convinced your cat had brought in a present of a bird or mouth. Not knowing what a leaf bug looks like, I'm away to Google it.

    1. The cat seems to like bugs. We always find a collection of beetles at our door step. -Presents from the cat.
