Death Juice

My teenage daughter is always trying new diets.  It seems to be the thing to do among kids her age.  The diet of the week is called a Paleo Diet.  Supposedly, it's all the natural stuff humans are supposed to consume. She read the list of foods and ingredients needed.  Since it was all healthy, I gave her the go ahead to try it.

Day one came, and on the breakfast menu, was a smoothie made of coconut milk, fresh berries and peanut butter.  She pulled out the blender, dumped in the ingredients, and pressed the "blend" button.  A couple minutes later, she had a brownish-purplish concoction.

She  poured it in a glass and took a sip.  "OMG. This is awful!"  (Yes, she literally did say, O M G.)

"It can't be that bad," I said.  "Let me try some."

I poured a little in my glass.  And let me tell you, she was right.  It was horrible!  I don't know what the problem was:  Bad berries.  Bad coconut milk.  But it was so bitter, that even I had to discard it.

"You know what this is?" my daughter said.  "Death juice!"

Needless to say, death juice is no longer on the Paleo Diet menu!

  1. Skip the coconut milk and get good berries and it just might be good.

    1. The berries were fine, so I'm not sure what attributed to the bitter taste. I didn't sample the coconut milk. It's still sitting in our refrigerator. That may be the culprit, but I'm afraid to try it!

  2. it's probably because of the peanut butter

  3. It sounds horrible. Glad the yucky drink is off the menu. Looking forward to what happens next. D

    1. I would've thought it would've been good. Something had to be wrong with the coconut milk.

  4. Sounds nasty as can be. With tossing the death juice we agree

  5. I like all of those things by themselves, but was having a hard time imagining them together. Coconut water and berries- yes. Peanut butter and berries- probably okay too. Altogether- it sounds like your daughter coined te perfect name!

    1. It most certainly tasted like Death Juice. (Not that I've ever tried such a thing before!)

  6. Cute! I tried Naked Juice after hearing it was great. I tried every version imaginable and just couldn't do it, even holding my nose while I drank! The worst part is, you seem to burp that junk for hours afterward.

    1. I've had Naked Juice. I know what you mean about the after taste!

  7. *LOL* So by making the food awful, the diet works since no one eats it!

    1. Oh. . . So that's how it works. You're so brilliant to figure that out! ;0)

  8. Trying new diets is a thing with teenagers? How odd, lol. My 14yo is yet to try one, & I hope it stays that way. With her OCD, it'd be a mess! I wish I still had her metabolism to eat like she does and still weigh only 100 pds. At least she's stopped growing & that means I'll always be taller than her, muhahaha!!

    1. Maybe it's just the thing with kids in Atlanta. They're very experimental. (My daughter passed me up a couple of years ago. I'm going to be the shorty in the family. ;0))

  9. Those ingredients are so random, that it's no wonder this tasted awful when they were thrown together!

    1. Very random. But separately they taste fine. Either it was bad coconut milk, or the combination was deadly.

    1. Yes, she does. As long as it's nothing harmful, I allow her to experiment.

  11. Oh LOL! I love all those ingredients - but I think I know now why it never occurred to me to mix them - and now I'm never going to ;)
I like it though that your daughter tries out new foods :)

    1. I'm going to have to check the coconut milk. Maybe something was wrong with it. I like that she tries new things, too.

  12. Wow her with science: if we were meant to be carnivores, we'd have a shorter gut. Long guts are made for digesting plants. We're omnivores, at best. Also, carnivores actual synthesize vitamin C...we can't do that, either. Boom. Myth exploded. And you thought I was just another pretty face (not).

Don't take that to mean I don't do Paleo, ha ha ha.

Have a great day, Sherry! ;-)

    1. I had no idea about the length of guts being related to how an organism eats. That's very interesting. Thank you for teaching me something new, oh wise one!

  13. Oh, how funny, lol! Smoothies are great for you but you have to take care that they also taste good. Nevermind if they look good--many times they don't. Coconut milk and peanut butter wouldn't have it bitter. Must have been the berries.

Be interesting to see what she comes up with next. :-) Tell her that Prevention.com has about 25-30 different smoothies, most of which actually taste good.

  15. That's weird. When I was a kid, I did even think about dieting. Times are different.

    1. I think a lot of girls are obsessed with having the perfect body. They try all kinds of diets for this quest. I think the media has a lot to do with it.

  16. Paleo, super trendy.

Sorry though, she feels she has to diet. That's sad, at her age that this is what she's thinking about - when there are about a million more ways to better spend time and energy.
