Mama is in Trouble, AGAIN!

I can't seem to keep myself out of trouble.  Yesterday's escapade involved a party invitation.  You wouldn't think I could get in trouble with that.  But I did.

My daughter was invited to a birthday party.  She asked me to call the number and RSVP for it.  So I did - in the middle of the afternoon.  I was expecting either a voice mail, or an adult on the other end.  That's not what I got.

"Hello?" the voice answered.  It was clearly a young person.

"Hi," I said with my still-hoarse voice.  "Can I talk to your mom?"

"Who is this?" the voice asked.

"Sherry Ellis.  I'm (insert my daughter's name) mom.  I'm calling to RSVP for the birthday party."

Two seconds later, I heard another voice.  It was strangely familiar.  "Mom?" it said.

It was my daughter.  "Why am I talking to you?" she asked.

"Why am I talking to you?" I asked, equally confused.

"Mom, the teacher's coming. I'm not supposed to be on the phone during school.  You just got me in trouble!"

Great.  All I did was call the number on the invitation.  Why in the world was it to a kid's cell phone? And why did my daughter have to be sitting next to the said kid in class?  Now I'm in trouble for getting my daughter in trouble!  Oy!

      In all of my experiences RSVPing, I've never been given a kid's cell phone number.

    Wow what are the odds :) too funny. I had to re-read this twice because at first I thought it was your daughter who answered. Plot twist!

    That girl should be in trouble for answering her phone during class. My daughter's school takes the phone for the day if the kid is caught using it during class.

      I don't know what happened to the girl's cell phone. It was a substitute teacher, so she may have been allowed to keep it.

      Exactly. I told my daughter to tell her friend she's coming to the party, so I don't have to go through that awkward situation, again.

      The number on the invitation was the kid's cell phone. I told my daughter to tell her that she'd be coming to the party.

    Oh no! That's odd that the RSVP number wasn't for the parents' phone. And why in the world would the girl answer the phone during class, and then give it to your daughter? She was asking for trouble.

    Ha! So, is the friend organizing her own party? I suppose that shows initiative, but still it's highly unexpected.

      I don't get it. Usually parents organize everything. Makes me wonder what kind of party this is going to be. I may have to stick around and supervise!

    they let them have their phones on at school? I usually confiscate the phone when I catch a pupil with it :)

      I didn't think they were supposed to have phones on in school. I don't understand, either.

      I agree. The parent should've at least put an email address to RSVP to, if she didn't want to handle phone calls.

    Cell phones should be turned off and put away in a book bag or locked up in a locker. You did nothing wrong. It's not your fault.

    I'm not even allowed to have my phone at work. If it's not in my locker, I better not be clocked in or I'll be written up (and I'm the boss!).

      I think kids use these phones in school like iPods. That's why they have them.

    Wow, I thought cell phones were to be shut off during school hours. I'd say you are not in trouble. You didn't know the RSVP number wasn't the home number or for an adult.

    Bad mom! I did a similar thing once thinking it was going to my daughter's voice mail while she was at school.

    I send texts to my daughters' phones while at school, but I expect that the phone is on silent and the texts will be read at the end of the school day, not in class. Hopefully the teacher understood the mix-up, but the phone's ringer should not have been on!
