Road Hazard

I'm back from my vacation to Hilton Head (and trip to Kentucky).  And I have quite a few stories to share!

The first involves a little old lady and a Cadillac.

My family and I had just arrived on the island of Hilton Head (South Carolina, for those of you who might not be familiar with American geography).  We were driving down the road, when this big old white Cadillac cut in front of us. Its hazard lights were on.

"What the heck?" I said. Then I looked in the car. In the front seat was a little old lady who literally could not see over the steering wheel.  Her white-haired head came only half way up to the wheel.  There was no way she could see what she was doing!

"We need to give this character a wide berth!" I said.

We watched as she weaved in and out of traffic, speeding her way down the road, tailgating people until they moved out of her way.  I had no idea how she managed not to hit anyone, because most of the time, she was driving right on the line, taking up two lanes.

The scene was so funny, I just started laughing.

"Mama?" my son, Bubba, asked. "Why are her hazard lights on?"

"Because she's warning everyone that she's a hazard on the road!"

(I wonder if the Little Old Lady from Hilton Head is related to the Little Old Lady from Pasadena?)

  1. She was a hazard, wasn't she? At that point, she needs to pull over and turn in her license. Get someone to drive her instead. My grandmother drove well into her nineties, and she really, really shouldn't have been driving...

    1. Yes. There's no way she should've ever gotten her license in the first place!

  2. Funny. My 95 year old grandpa who's has macular degeneration and deaf in both ears finally had his license taken away. After he fell asleep at the wheel and ran into a truck.

    1. Not good! I have to wonder why he thought he could drive in that condition. Maybe he didn't want to acknowledge getting old.

  6. Why do all little old ladies drive over sized cars?

    1. Good question! I don't know. Maybe big old cars remind them of their youth. Or maybe they feel safer in them.

  7. We both have interesting elderly stories about driving ;-) Yes, she should give up her keys!

  8. It's hard getting older. They say for men it's the driving and for women they can't taste and cook at good anymore.

PS: That purple one was a digital jigsaw puzzle. Played on the tablet. What I'm doing now is a quilt in real life.

The person driving that car sounds just like my Mom looked when she drove... bless her heart... I sure miss her...

    1. She was something else! Fortunately, she was going much faster than us, so she wasn't near us for long!

  12. Glad you were safe! My Granny was like that; fortunately the keys to her Caddy were permanently 'lost' before any harm was done.

  16. I tried imagining a small old lady driving an oversized car and it's quite funny in my head, but I'm sure it must have been very dangerous for everyone there, too.

    1. Very scary! She's probably one of those people who will have nothing happen to her, but cause other people to get hurt.

  20. I pray for the safety of others. I just think that being of advancing age doesn't give anyone the license to be reckless because she might cause the accident of others.

    1. We couldn't see Harbor Town because there wasn't one place to park. Lots of people! The beach was beautiful, though. Especially early in the morning. I really enjoyed walking along it.

  23. Maybe she knew exactly what she was doing and just liked scaring the heck out of other drivers. Old ladies are feisty that way.

  24. Glad you were able to stay out of her way! She sounds like one determined and scary driver. :)

    1. Yes! In addition to not being able to see over the steering wheel, she probably had cataracts or something.
