Ready for a new bout of stupidity? It's the Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge. Kylie is one of the Kardashian clan. She recently had plastic surgery to make her lips look fuller. Now everybody thinks she has great looking lips. Whatever.
The problem is that teenagers are trying to emulate the look. How? By sucking the air out of shot glasses. I learned about this when my teenage daughter attempted it. She showed up, with her lips looking noticeably puffy.
"What did you do?" I asked.
"The Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge," she said.
"The what?"
"You suck air out of shot glass and keep your lips there for five minutes."
"Are you serious?" I couldn't believe it. "You know that's not very smart," I said. "You can damage your lips. And what happens if the shot glass breaks?"
I don't think many kids have even given this a thought. They just want puffy lips. Needless to say, my daughter will not be doing the Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge again.
If you want to learn about this insanity, and the damage it can cause, there's an article from the Washington Post. You can read it here.
That is just stupid. Who cares how puffy the lips? Ladies - news flash - guys don't care.
ReplyDeleteHahaha, I know. It's amazing how many things girls do that guys really don't give two rats about. Though some say, the girls are really doing it to impress other girls. Equally as dumb.
DeleteYou're right. Guys don't care. The media just promotes this garbage about how women are supposed to look. Unfortunately, so many girls and women think they have to look like that in order to be attractive.
DeleteEvery year there's something new isn't there? A little while ago it was "Neck Nominate" now it's a ridiculous "Lip Challenge". It's amazing how humanity survives.
ReplyDeleteAmazing, indeed!
DeleteAs far as I'm aware not something that has reached us across the pond yet. At the moment the latest trend seems to thankfully involve a relatively harmless eye brow trend which sees people exaggerating their eyebrows.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. That one isn't here yet.
DeleteAccording to the article, Kylie's plump lips are natural, not surgically-enhanced. In any event, the challenge is super-stupid. The lengths people go to in the name of beauty when they are already beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure the article is correct about Kylie's lips. There are photos of her before and after, and the difference is quite noticeable. It's not the way she naturally was.
DeleteSometimes I wonder how the human race has survived this long. This is another one of those times.
ReplyDeletePeople are so obsessed with their looks. It's ridiculous!
DeleteThankfully my daughter has naturally full lips and she doesn't seem to want them bigger... there is always something and it's frustrating at times... :-/
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your daughter isn't interested in the challenge. Quite frankly, I'm surprised my daughter was. She has fuller lips, too.
DeleteI don't think anyone would want to do that.
ReplyDeleteThe things children get up to is utterly amazing.
Yvonne.
Anything to look like a celebrity, I guess.
DeleteAmazing the stupid things that go around, just when you think society has hit a new low, it goes deeper
ReplyDeleteThese kind of things make me scratch my head. Are we so superficial that we have to resort to this?
DeleteI've been told it's extremely dangerous and that several people have been put into the hospital because of it.
ReplyDeleteYes. A lot of young women have needed stitches because of it.
DeleteI read about that. It's so sad to be promoting dangerous stuff like that. I saw a picture of a girl with cut, swollen lips from trying it.
ReplyDeleteYes. I don't think these young people had a clue that they could get hurt trying it.
DeleteAs a child, I was picked on by people who said I had big lips, except they said it in a much meaner way. Now women do all sorts of things to obtain lips larger than mine.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Isn't it crazy? I wonder what they'll devise if thin lips ever come into fashion.
DeleteLip reduction surgery?
DeleteI saw a reference to this and the only thing I could think of was walking around with a glass on my mouth as a kid and making a bruise-like circle. Pure embarrassment.
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly what a lot of these girls end up with after trying it.
DeleteOh my word, what is this world coming too? It's a good thing you're a mom who keeps tabs on what's going on, Sherry.
ReplyDeleteI wish I would've caught her before she tried it. Fortunately, she didn't do it for the full five minutes.
DeletePretty sad anyone would do this
ReplyDeleteI guess it's all about trying to obtain beauty.
DeleteI guess their self esteem makes them do weird things. I would think that people would be happy with what God has given them.
ReplyDeleteTeen girls are especially vulnerable to this. They have a lot of issues with self confidence, and are very concerned about what they look like.
DeleteThe thought of those blood vessels being pulled is making me squirm :/
ReplyDeleteYes. Me too!
DeleteYou can suggest an alternative, that is to add just a tiny drop of cinnamon to vaseline , mix it and then apply it will make her lips look fuller for a few hours, and i t is harmless and natural. Another thing she could also do is to scrub her lips with a little sugar with a brush, and that would give her also a naturally fuller lips.
ReplyDeleteI think the shot glass thing is a bit dangerous.
Teenagers want to look good , and it is quite natural, at least your daughter shared her trick with you, instead of doing it behind your back and hurting herself.
I also remember doing crazy things like rubbing my skin insane with pumice stone, for we were told to if we keep doing it would get rid of the unwanted hair on our arms and legs.
However, we should do it gently and only over a period of time we would see some result. But we were crazy and wanted everything immediately so many of us have scars from using it in the most stupid manner.
I had never heard of the cinnamon and Vaseline trick. It certainly sounds a lot safer then the shot glass method!
DeleteI would simply cheer up inner beauty rather than physical beauty.
ReplyDeleteYes! Inner beauty shines through and lasts a lot longer than physical beauty.
DeleteDouble yuck. It's sad that this is what our kids want to imitate, especially when there are young people out there doing amazing things of all kinds artistically, philanthropically, in sports, etc.
ReplyDeleteI agree. There are certainly much better role models who aren't so concerned about outer appearances.
DeleteThe Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge... Is that a fact? Well, it seems to me looking like a duck is not an improvement.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I looked like a duck after I had surgery to detach my frenum, and believe me, I did not look attractive with puffy lips!
DeleteI have not heard of this trick, who comes up with these crazy ideas and it is sad that teenage girls feel the need to try things like this to keep up with what is perceived to be beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI have to wonder who first thought of this, and how it went viral.
DeleteKids these days are bored. Obviously.
ReplyDeleteThey must be.
DeleteI saw this on the news the other night, and all the girls with bruising around their mouths from doing the challenge. It's frightening!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely one of the more dangerous challenges!
