This morning, I opened the cupboard to pull out the container of oatmeal. That should have been an uneventful situation. But it wasn't.
As soon as I opened it, something fell out. A container of cocoa powder. Not just any container of cocoa powder, but one that had not been properly closed after the last use.
I bet you can't guess what happened.
My nice white socks were no longer white. My legs were covered in a fine brown powder. The floor was completely trashed.
"Kids!" I called. "Come here!"
They came. "Who was the last one to use the cocoa powder?"
My son looked at me. "Not me!"
My daughter looked at me. "Not me!"
I gave them one of my Mama glares. "I know it wasn't Schultz, Bootsy, or Dad. It was one of you. And I distinctly remember someone making brownies, yesterday."
I focused on my daughter.
"It wasn't me," she said. "It was my friend. She used the cocoa powder and put it back."
I sighed. Of course it was the friend. "Tell your friend to make sure all products are properly sealed, closed, and stacked, so this doesn't happen again!"
"Yes, Ma'am."
They scampered off, leaving me to clean up the mess. Oy gewalt!
On another note, I am very happy that my book, That Mama is a Grouch, won first place in the Family Matters Category of the 2015 Purple Dragonfly book awards. That makes me less grouchy! I know for many of you, this is going to be a shock, because I rarely post pictures, but here's one of me with my book and certificate (taken after I washed off the cocoa powder):
Cocoa--not me, I didn't do it...the universal lie. Fortunately, my kids were lousy liars.
ReplyDeleteOh, the odor of chocolate must have been wonderful.
Haha! As far as the smell, I don't think cocoa powder smells all that good. It's much better after it's been mixed with all the other ingredients to make cake or brownies!
DeleteCongratulations!! That is awesome, Sherry.
ReplyDeleteSchultz didn't lick all the cocoa off you?
No. He wasn't around. But if he was, I wouldn't let him. Chocolate is very bad for dogs.
DeleteWhy didn't you call Bootsy to lick the floor clean or Schultz?
ReplyDeleteYay for the award and for the photo :)
It would've made my animals quite sick, so I kept them away.
DeleteIt's always the friend. ;)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the award!!
Of course! And thanks!
DeleteYes, congrats, Sherry.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteCONGRATULATIONS on the award!!!! That is awesome!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteCongrats. Sorry about the cocoa. On the bright side, at least your kids cook. That's something.
ReplyDeleteTrue. I just wish they'd clean up a little better! :)
DeleteLoved the story and many congratulations on your book. Well done.
ReplyDeleteYvonne.
CONGRATULATIONS! You go, girl. Cocoa powder makes a terrible mess. Favorite Young Man spilled some when he was about ten--a million years ago--and tried to clean it up with the dust buster. Then the dust buster was ruined because it couldn't handle the mess. Do people still have dust busters? I remember ours didn't work very well.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
I remember dust busters. I never had one, though. I'm sorry about your dust buster's demise due to cocoa powder. That must have been a very sad day. ;)
DeleteCongrats! Well deserved and just one example of why they might think 'that Mama is a Grouch'. I think you have the patience of a saint. . .
ReplyDeleteHaha! There have been many such occasions to demonstrate why Mama is a grouch!
DeleteGood Schultz didn't come and roll in it haha congrats, that is awesome.
ReplyDeleteThat would have been an even bigger mess! Thanks for the congrats!
DeleteCongratulations, that's more than enough to make up for cocoa powder disasters!
ReplyDeleteNever mind the cocoa
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to you. That Mama is a Grouch deserves the award.
I love it.
Thank you, Peaches!
DeleteThat's so cool! Great accomplishment. I've been thinking about posting about reading my copy with Hazil, but haven't gotten around to it. If and when I do, I'll have to link to this post about your award! - I'd have probably made daughter help with the clean up to make sure she cared to caution her friends.
ReplyDeleteThat would be great! I'd certainly appreciate it!
DeleteNormally, I would make the kids clean up, but I just didn't want to deal with the mess they'd probably make. It was better just to do it myself.
I was an only child so when an entire box of cookies went missing over night, my mom came to ask me. The problem was, I was still sleeping. I said, "Mmm, can I have some milk?" She brought me a glass of milk but couldn't get me to wake up to drink it. When I asked about the cookies later (having no memory of her asking me), she told me what had happened and I swear that I didn't eat them. I had finished off the other box of cookies (chocolate chip) but hadn't even gotten to try the new batch (apple cinnamon). Turns out, our 130 pound sneaky dog had stolen them from the counter and eaten them all himself .
ReplyDeleteHaha! You have to watch those sneaky dogs!
DeleteCongrats on winning first place!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a mess. Once in a while I don't close something properly.
It's happened to me, too. It's such a mess when it spills everywhere.
DeleteThe friend theory, sure. Congrats on winning!
ReplyDeleteThank you!

ReplyDeleteCongrates for wining the award. And with regard to story children usually does like that.
ReplyDeleteThank you. Yes, the kid never does it - it's always someone else.
DeleteParenting is always an adventure!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the award!!!!!!
Hello,
ReplyDeleteMy hearty congratulations.
Children are always naughty and curious. Sometimes it is good to keep a watch on them lest they hurt themselves. Once my son was trying to put his little finger in an electric socket to see if he will get a shock.
Best wishes
Oh! I hope he didn't get hurt!
DeleteCongratulations!!! That's awesome. Yes, kids can be pretty hazardous when they take over the kitchen!
ReplyDeleteThey sure can!
DeleteCongrats on your win, Sherry! You look fabulous in the photo! xoxo
ReplyDeleteThat's so nice of you to say! Thank you, Shirley!
DeleteCONGRATS on the award!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteChocolate oatmeal! Congratulations on our book award and if that's the way your kids treat you, it's no wonder you're a grouch :)
ReplyDeleteHaha! My kids definitely know how to make messes, but they've gotten much better at cleaning up after themselves.
DeleteCongratulations Sherry! and lovely pic :)
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI don't think I've ever seen a single kid that actually confessed to something like this. So the question becomes - who's making all of these messes?
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the book award! That's awesome!
On occasion, one of my kids confesses, which is a good thing. Otherwise, I'll just have to assume the dog did it. ;)
DeleteYay! Way to go, well done on the award, its well deserved.
ReplyDeleteWonderful and congrats. Great to see a picture in this post.
