The Big Chase
Schultz, our hundred-pound German Shepherd is very proud of himself. He did a good job shepherding. At least that's what he thinks.
Yesterday evening, the dog was outside playing fetch with his tennis ball. Half-way through the game, he stopped. He turned his attention to the fenced-in retaining area that's surrounded by huge holly bushes at the edge of our property. He stood perfectly still, listening intently. Then he raised his paw, like he was pointing. (He actually does point. When he wants to play the flashlight game, he goes to the closet where the flashlight is, and points.)
"What is it, boy?" I asked.
He pointed again.
I knew there must be something in the retaining area. "Go get it!" I said.
He did.
You should've heard the commotion! I had no idea what could possibly be making that kind of raucous.
I found out soon enough.
Less than two minutes later, six very frightened deer burst out with Schultz in hot pursuit. He chased those deer half way down the street, until they were well out of our territory.
Then he trotted back, his long pink tongue flopping about, looking quite pleased with himself.
Before I go, I would like to thank Medeia Sharif for reviewing my new book, Ten Zany Birds, and featuring it on her blog. That was a great surprise!
I wonder who was more surprised - you or the deer?
ReplyDeleteI think it was equal!
DeleteOh my! That's quite a few deer he chased off.
ReplyDeleteI'd say it was impressive!
DeleteIsn't that fascinating that he waited until you gave him the go ahead to go "find" the trespassers? I'll bet it was pretty exciting!
ReplyDeleteI thought that was interesting, too. I would've expected him to just charge right in.

ReplyDeleteOh dear, Schultz almost gave those deer a heart attack and a good run too. :)
DeleteI would've had a heart attack if a big dog like that was chasing me!
DeleteI love that he points. Our shepherd/beagle loves to hold hands. Such a great thing, pets.
ReplyDeleteYou'd think he was a Pointer or something. :)
DeleteOh fortunately the frightened deer got escaped.
ReplyDeleteHopefully the deer learned their lesson.
DeletePoor Deer must have been frightened.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed the read Sherry.
Yvonne.
I'm sure they were! Glad you enjoyed the post.
DeleteIt still says Blogger Profile not available when I try to visit your site, Yvonne. Sorry I can't stop by to visit.
DeleteSchultz sure made quick work of those intruders
ReplyDeleteHe was doing his job!
DeleteHe herded them up
ReplyDeleteHe sure did. He was living up to his name.
DeleteMy dog doesn't quite chase the deer. She just stares at them. The other day, she was standing there barking at the one that was on the other side of the fence from her. That deer just stared at her as if to say, "What's your problem?"
ReplyDeleteIs your dog big? Schultz is a giant. Everyone and everything who doesn't know him, is afraid of him. The deer just look at Schultz and run.
DeleteThat's so cute that he points. And I can just picture him after chasing those deer. haha
ReplyDeleteSchultz pointing is the funniest thing to see. The dog is really smart!
DeleteOh, glad the deer made it!
ReplyDeleteThey didn't end up as dog food . . . this time!
DeleteMaybe Schultz is breed confused. I'm thankful he protected you and your property from those dreadful deer. ;)
ReplyDeleteThose deer are really fearsome! ;0)
DeleteWell, he definitely protected you and your property...
ReplyDeleteYes, he did. He's quite a guard dog. Even at 3:00 AM, he let's us know when anything suspicious is lurking around the property.
DeleteOh deer!
ReplyDeleteLOL!
DeleteMeanwhile, my tiny dogs are terrified of our kitten and won't even go near her. Want to trade?
ReplyDeleteYour kitten must be ferocious! ;0)
DeleteI'll bet Schultz had a wonderful time. My dog usually only gets to chase rabbits or squirrels.
ReplyDeleteSchultz was thrilled. We let him into the woods once, and he had a ball chasing the whole herd through the trees.
DeleteOh the poor deer. My dog wants to chase squirrels in the park, but I do my best to keep him under control. It's hard since he's a terrier and it's in his blood.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to eliminate the prey drive. Schultz has a big one.
DeleteThat dog is cool :)
ReplyDeleteHe's very cool!

ReplyDeleteNote to self .... put glasses on before reading/commenting it saves a lot of time and deleting.
ReplyDeleteMy brother in law had a German Shepherd who was bred as a police dog but never got beyond initial training as she didn't have the right temperament. The softest dog I have ever known, to see a big dog trying to scramble into a bath every time the wind blew was hilarious.
Aww. Sounds like a sweet dog. Schultz would make an excellent police dog. He likes to track, he has a strong prey drive, and he's very intelligent. In fact, many people think he is a police dog.
DeleteSomebody probably already said this, but 'oh, deer, oh, deer!' That Schultz!
