My nine-year-old son bought himself an electric scooter a couple of days ago. He'd been asking for one for a couple of years. I finally told him he could have one if he bought it with his own money. That's what he did.
We brought it home and I put it together. He hopped on and started scooting up the street. If you are unfamiliar with electric scooters, they look like regular scooters you push with your feet, but they are much heavier. Normally, you start them by pushing with your feet, until they reach a speed of 5 miles per hour, and then the electric part kicks in, and you can just stand on it and let the scooter go by itself. Eventually, they run out of power, and need to be recharged.
Anyway, my son scooted up and down the hills of our neighborhood. I followed. When we were a considerable way from home, the scooter conked out. My son had to use old fashioned leg power to scoot up and down the hills. This was apparently exhausting.
"Mama," he complained. "You have to stop, because me and this scooter have something in common."
"What's that, Bubba?"
"We're out of power, and can't go another inch!"
Hope the charge holds a little longer next time!
ReplyDeleteIt's supposed to last 40 minutes. I think my boy spent most of the afternoon on it, so it doesn't surprise me that it ran out of power.

ReplyDeleteI don't know if I am glad or regret all of the things that kids have now that we didn't when I was young. Those scooters sound fun, but I am sure I got more exercise biking everywhere. Hmm. It's a dilemma.
Kids really seem to like scooters. They have bikes, too. I guess it depends on their mood, which one they'll use. I'm just happy to see them playing outside!

ReplyDeleteI was very hesitant to let him get an electric scooter, because I wanted him to have more exercise, but as it turns out, he ended up getting plenty using it!

DeleteNice to hear about your son's involvement in buying the electric scooter. My son also has one but not electric ordinary scooter. Now a days he gets very tired in riding that.
ReplyDeleteIt is a good exercise for the kids to ride the scooter.
I think it's important for kids to learn to save their money, and then use their own to buy something they really want. It gives them a sense of pride, and also teaches them the value of money.

DeleteThat's funny! Now that I'm older, it takes the batteries a lot longer to recharge than they used to, and they don't quite reach 100%. I'm happy if I reach 70.

ReplyDeleteSounds like the scooter would be lots of fun, as long as it doesn't run out of power. Maybe there needs to be some scooter recharge stations added to your area. : )
