Schultz and the Spider

For those of you who don't know Schultz, he is our hundred-pound German Shepherd.  And he likes to cause trouble.  Yesterday's trouble involved a spider.

I was typing at the computer, when I noticed the beast lying on the ground looking very alert.  His satellite ears were straight up, and he was staring at something in front of him, between his paws.  I had to investigate.

What I found was an itsy bitsy spider, all curled up.  It appeared to be rather distressed.

"Schultz, leave the spider alone!" I said.

But Schultz didn't want to leave the spider alone.  He wanted to give it a good sniff.

For a minute, I thought the spider was dead.  But then its legs moved.  It looked like it was trying to curl itself into a tighter ball.

I knew I had to get the beast out of there.  "Come, Schultz!"

Schultz came, but not before having a little spider snack.  He cleaned the itsy bitsy spider right off the floor with his big pink tongue.

So much for the itsy bitsy spider!

  2. Yikes. I would say he was trying to save you from it crawling on you--but it sounds like he just wanted a snack!

    1. Yes, I'd have to agree. It looked like a tasty morsel to the giant beast.

  4. Bug, our little German Shepherd Beagle mix, loves to bug hunt. It's all fair game to her, though her current obsession: boring bees. She goes batty and tries to catch them.

  5. Schultz could give new lyrics to the "Itsy Bitsy, Spider' song.

  6. I freak out when my dog is near a spider not because I don't want him to hurt the thing but because I don't want the spider to hurt my puppy (11 year old schnauzer). Sorry spidey my loyalties lie with the hound.

    1. Then Schultz would spider eggs with the itsy bitsy spider. Two for the price of one.

  11. Oh no, the poor spider!! I'm so sorry to hear it didn't make it. Did Schultz have that look after like he didn't do anything? ;)

    1. No. He had no expression. It was just part of the dog job, and he moved on with his day. ;0)

    1. I was watching America's Funniest Home videos last night, and one had a kid eating a spider - much bigger than the one I saw. I couldn't believe it!

    1. When we first found Bootsy, our cat, he was a stray and all he lived on was insects.

  15. One of our cats thought flies were better than the expensive, healthy cat crunchies I supplied. Actually, that was great. She was better than a pest control service. She didn't eat spiders.

    1. Smart cat - not eating spiders! Not sure about the flies, though. ;0)

  17. Oh, dogs! Something similar happened with my labby, once....although she was "brilliant" enough to eat a bee and have her tongue stung!!

  18. Poor spider! Fur-peeps have to taste everything. Mine like bird poo. Yuck!

  19. Eww! But a slurped-up spider is better than a crawling-around-and-scaring-you spider. Yay for Schultz!

  20. I was thinking you were going to tell us that he sucked the spider right into his nose! At least it ended up in the right orifice! But I'm glad he got the spider before it got him. :)
