My mom just had her sixty-fifth birthday, and to celebrate the occasion, my kids and I had a little party for her. It began with a trip to a restaurant, where, after the dinner, the entire crew of waiters came out with a hot fudge cake, belting out something that sounded like the Happy Birthday song.
Mom decided to take the cake back to the condo where we were staying, and share it with us. Little did she know, I had another cake there for her. I pulled out the German chocolate cake. "Surprise!"
She clapped her hands together in glee. "More cake!"
So, the lady divided the hot fudge cake, cut a piece of German chocolate cake, and topped it all off with ice cream.
I looked at her plate. And then I looked at her. "Mom, don't you think that's a little too much sugar?"
She shook her head. "Nah!"
Then my boy grabbed the sugar jar. He poured at least an eighth of a cup of sugar into his cup of peppermint tea.
I looked at my kid in disbelief.
My mom laughed. "Now that's a little too much sugar!"
You can never have too much of a good thing, just ask Cookie Monster.
ReplyDeleteHaha! Right. And Cookie Monster knows all about what's good!
DeleteIn the South, that's not enough. It has to be equal parts tea and sugar.
ReplyDeleteNow I have Def Leppard's song in my head...
Thanks. Now I have the Def Leppard song in my head. ;0)
DeleteIt's all relative to what you're eating or drinking. . .yeah, sweet tea in the south is sometimes SWEET tea. But unsweetened is gross, IMO. I still make my own iced tea in Canada. I like lemon in mine. Some habits stay with us no matter where we go.
ReplyDeleteHappy belated to your mom, that's a milestone birthday, so two slices of cake sounds okay - you didn't say how thick the cake slices were, though.
The German Chocolate slice was really thick. But you're right - she can celebrate with lots of sugar on her 65th birthday if she wants!
Deletekids should never be trusted with sugar jars....
ReplyDeleteSugar doesn't last long in sugar jars if kids get a hold of them!
DeleteHe must have been bouncing off the walls
ReplyDeleteHe's always bouncing off the walls! ;0)
DeleteNo wonder Bubba's so darned sweet.
ReplyDeleteI guess that's the trick - lots of sugar!
DeleteHappy Birthday to the mama's mama. When I go to my favorite tea room, you wouldn't believe how many sugar cubes I put in my chocolate tea. I'm shameless.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
When I was in Germany, they had very strong coffee. I had to put 4 cubes of sugar in each cup, and I had at least three cups in the morning. The conductor couldn't believe the way I was bouncing off the walls at 9:30 in the morning!
Delete*Janie hangs head in shame* I use more than four sugar cubes. I use eight or ten in each cup.
DeleteOoo lovely cake!
ReplyDeletehappy belated b'day to your mum.. oh yes.. dues paid, time to eat cake!
She deserves a little indulgence!
DeleteYour son is right! And so is your mom. There is a such thing as too much sugar, but only when it tastes bad!
ReplyDeleteAnd makes you sick!
DeleteToo much cake? Never! I love cake. But I can't drink beverages that are too sweet though. Your son has me beat on that one.
ReplyDeleteNo such thing as too much cake!
DeleteSo ... no picture of the cake, eh?
ReplyDeleteHangs head low ...
Not here. You need to find me on FB and friend me. There are pictures there.
Delete*LOL* You can never have too much cake!
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely right!
DeleteAs long as it tastes good. Have at it
ReplyDeleteHaha! As long as your tummy isn't sick afterwards!
DeleteI almost had to sing happy birthday to a table today, but I warned them that nobody wants to hear that and they laughed. I wasn't joking. I hope your mom had a good birthday!
ReplyDeleteHa! I give credit to all the waiters who embarrass themselves singing Happy Birthday to customers!
DeleteHappy Birthday to your Mom! Sounds like you had fun, even with the extra sugar!
ReplyDeleteWe always have fun!
DeleteI hope he didn't drink that - I bet he was climbing the wall like a spider monkey afterwards!
ReplyDeleteI made him dump it out and try again.
DeleteSounds like Bubba knows how to drink his tea. Belated Happy Birthday wishes to your Mom.
ReplyDeleteShe really enjoyed our time together.
DeleteLike grandmother, like grandson. I've always had a sweet tooth, but I've been cutting back lately.
ReplyDeleteIt's much healthier for you that way. I actually went a couple of months with no desserts, and when I started having them again, they seemed so sweet - too sweet.
DeleteI agree: Too much sugar? There's no such thing! LOL
ReplyDeleteHaha! Don't let your kids know that, though!
DeleteLol'ing around! Your boy sure knows how to top off with sugar! Happy Birthday to your mum!
ReplyDeleteHe's an expert! My mom had a great birthday!
DeleteAs a chocoholic, I'd have to agree with you!
ReplyDeleteLOL! The thought of having that much sugar is already giving me a headache... XD
ReplyDeleteAnyway, glad your mom seemed to have a great birthday! :)
I couldn't eat that much cake and ice cream!
DeleteThere's no such thing as too much sugar. Until after you've eaten three pieces and you're in bed, rolled into the fetal position, and your stomach is telling you otherwise.
ReplyDeleteYes. That would be a good indication that you've had a little too much sugar!
DeleteHappy Birthday to your mom! My tummy is hurting just reading about all of that sugar.
