It's time for the Underrated Treasures Blogfest hosted by Alex Cavanaugh. Participants are supposed to name movies, TV shows, music, musicians, or books that not a lot of people know about, but should, because they're so awesome.
For my selection, I've chosen the Tejano singer, Selena Quintanilla Perez, whose life was tragically cut short. She was murdered by her fan club president on March 31, 1995. I don't remember how old she was, but she was still in her twenties.
I first heard her sing when I was in my early twenties. She was singing a crossover song, Dreaming of You, and I thought, "Wow! What a beautiful voice!" I have always loved Latino music, so I decided to purchase some of her CDs. (Plus I had a boyfriend from Mexico at the time, and I figured it would be a good way to learn Spanish so I could communicate with the Madre and Padre!)
From what I've read and heard about Selena, she was also a very warm, kind person. I'd love to have met her.
Here are some music videos, so you can hear and see this talented, beautiful woman.
Such a tragic ending to such a promising career and the life of a beautiful woman.
ReplyDeleteThanks for participating in my blogfest.
It was a tragic loss! Thanks for hosting the blogfest!
Deleteand we remember the movie about her which was J.Lo's first movie role....
ReplyDeleteYes. What a launch for J. Lo!
DeleteI was wondering if the TV movie I saw starring J. Lo. was about the same Selena. I see from Dezmond's comment it is/was. I didn't want the entire show, and I had no idea she was murdered by her fan club president. That is heartbreaking. She quickly rose to fame - so sad. Great pick, Sherry. Her music is beautiful as was she.
ReplyDeleteShe was so talented. I wonder where her path would've gone if she was still alive.
DeleteSelena Gomez was actually named after her. I remember watching stories about her when I was younger with my mom. My mom always watched things about tragic or crazy events. Selena was on a few of the most tragic death lists, along with Natalie Wood (who died by drowning when her biggest fear was water) and other stars like them.
ReplyDeleteI wondered if Selena Gomez was named after her. Thanks for sharing that.
DeleteShe is really talented mam.
ReplyDeleteYes, she really was talented and it's horrible how short her life was.

DeleteHi, Sherry. Thanks for sharing your pick for the Underrated Treasures Blogfest. Selena was a very talented singer. I've seen the movie about her a couple of times now.
ReplyDeleteI saw the movie once. So sad that her life was cut short!
DeleteOh, Selena is a legend in our parts. I met her once, when she was very young, and already singing. I often drive by the hotel where she was killed, and think about her almost every time.
ReplyDeleteLucky you, to meet her! I'd like to visit Corpus Christi some day and see her boutique shop, and maybe visit her grave.
DeleteI also saw the movie starring Jennifer Lopez. Sad story.
ReplyDeleteVery sad!
DeleteShe was just breaking into the U.S. market when she was murdered by that woman. I remember this in the papers and J.Lo played her in a film. She had amazing talent and so sad that she was killed
ReplyDeleteShe would've gone far in the U.S. market. It's so sad her life was cut short.
DeleteI remember that tragedy and hearing her music after it happened.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like yesterday, doesn't it?

DeleteOh wow, I always think of the movie when I hear her songs, and then I remember she was a real woman. What a sad ending to her life. Sadder when it's real and not just a story. Great choice.
ReplyDeleteI hate to see such talented people lose their lives at such a young age! (I hate to see anyone die young, for that matter!)
DeleteI still love Selena's music! I have one of her CDs. She was amazingly talented. Sad that she was taken from us.
ReplyDeleteI think I have just about every CD she ever made.
