Snack Binge

Tomorrow Bubba, my ten-year-old son, gets braces. And you know what that means. No more popcorn, gum, caramel, or gummy worms! The boy is not pleased.

"Mama," he said.  "Can we go to the store?"

"What for?" I asked.

"So I can get a box of popcorn . . .  and potato chips, and gummy worms."

"Bubba, you're not going to binge on snacks. I'll make you some popcorn, but if you eat all that other stuff, you'll gain ten pounds in one day!"

He shrugged. "But I'll have two years to lose it."

Right.

Before I go, I would like to give a huge thanks to Janie Junebug, for featuring Ten Zany Birds on her blog, Tracy, for featuring That Mama is a Grouch on her blog, and Medeia and Deanie for their reviews of Ten Zany Birds! You guys rock!

Also, I found out that there was a problem with the Kindle version of Ten Zany Birds, where the text did not appear in the conversion. It looked like a wordless picture book. It's been fixed. If you purchased the Kindle version, and did not receive the update, please let me know and I'll send a PDF. (The hard copy is fine.)

  2. Favorite Young Man and The Hurricane had braces. They managed just fine without certain foods. Bubba will live.

    Love,
    Janie, and you're welcome

  3. Your son is too funny. I can see why he wanted to binge- but having your favorite is probably the most important. Hope the braces are smooth sailing!

  5. All well, at least it's not forever. Maybe he'll lose the taste for them while he has the braces on.

  8. I had braces for two and a half years. I was able to eat popcorn, chips, and even apples (sliced very thin). The only things I didn't eat were caramel, peanutbutter, and gum. As long as it's not super hard or super sticky, it can be worked with. A water pick is very handy for keeping the teeth clean. Do NOT let him use whitening toothpaste though or his teeth will look really funny when he gets the braces off. (Also, it's best to take a Tylenol thirty minutes before an appointment to get the wires tightened because it will result in soreness every time.)

    1. Thanks for the tip about whitening toothpaste. He's never used it, and I'll make sure he doesn't during the life of his braces.

  13. Loving his logic.

Thank you for the mention. I shared your book with my great-nephew (4 and a 1/2) and as I suspected he loved it.

  14. That poor boy! My second kid is a snack food junkie! He'd die if he couldn't eat those things:)

I hope the two years of wearing braces fly by for Bubba. I'll bet there are lots of great snacks that he can still enjoy. : )

  17. That reminds me of the trend from about 20 years ago or so of people wiring their jaws shut to lose weight. They'd have to live on Slim-Fast!

  18. Poor Bubba. Braces and on top of that no snack foods. You'll have to come up with replacements that he can eat easily. Congrats on the features and good reviews for 10 Zany Birds! I hope you get many many more!! :)

  20. He has a point. :)

I remember being bad and eating those banned foods, breaking a bracket or two. It wasn't too often. I should've been more mindful of my braces, since there are alternatives to those foods.

    1. I think my daughter broke a bracket eating chips once. That was the last time she did that.

  21. "Two years to lose it." Haha, I love it! :) I won't be able to argue with that. I guess he deserves one last binge.

  22. And two years is admittedly a long time, especially when you're his age, so...

  23. Your son's logic is spot on...of course he will have the time to lose it!

  26. Good luck with the braces. It may be tough for him, but he'll make it. ~~~ Sorry to hear about the Kindle mess up. That sort of stuff sucks. We authors have enough to worry about.

    1. It took a while to get the Kindle thing fixed. At least now that's one less headache. It's amazing how much authors have to go through. We should get paid more. ;0)

  29. I like the way Bubba thinks. I don't usually let my students eat candy in class, but one boy was scheduled to get braces later that day. Of course I had to make an exception -- and allow him to bounce off the walls a bit.

  31. I like his thinking. Pretty soon I'm going to have to get those invisalign adult braces to fix a slight crookedness in a few teeth. And I'm certain I'm going to eat popcorn, potato chips, and gummy worms as a way of preparing... even if I still can eat those things after getting the braces.

    1. I might need those invisaline things, too. These days, they put in permanent retainers, so you don't have to worry about your teeth shifting. Enjoy those gummy worms!
