Ancient Grains

The other day, when I walked past the shoe closet, I noticed an unpleasant odor. It didn't quite smell like stinky socks - something you might expect from such a closet. Curious, I opened the door. After some poking around, my nose led me to a lunch box. My son's lunch box. It was shoved in the back corner. Who only knew how long it had been sitting there.

I picked that thing up between my thumb and index finger, afraid of what lethal contaminant might be lurking inside, and placed it on the kitchen counter. I unzipped it. What  I found inside was a bunch of Ziploc bags. Most were empty. All except one. In that one was a sandwich, which at the very least, could be described as a science experiment gone wrong. The once nutritious whole-grain bread was covered in blue and yellow growth. The blue, I'm guessing, was mold. The yellow? Your guess is as good as mine. All I knew was that it produced an exceptionally foul odor which needed to be eliminated immediately if not sooner.

All I can say about that, was that my son gave new meaning to the words, "ancient grains."

(I was going to take a picture, but I figured it might make the majority of you want to vomit. I hope ya'll appreciate my consideration!)

    1. Yes! It should be part of the standard "mom" gear.

  6. Hi, Sherry!

I believe there is a method to Bubba's madness. That lunch box was not shoved to the back of the closet and forgotten. It was actually placed there on purpose as a science experiment. You see, Bubba is attempting to produce his own batch of penicillin so that he can play doctor and administer it to any family member that happens to fall ill this winter. No flu shots necessary! :)

Thanks for the chuckle, dear friend Sherry!

    1. It wouldn't surprise me if you were absolutely correct. It sounds like something he would do.

  8. Thank goodness there wasn't more food in there! Horrible when you find old food tucked away. Ancient grains for sure!

  9. I can visual the sandwich without a picture. Wish I could say they get neater when they turn 18. Nope. It was pretty scary for awhile.

  10. Your son seems a lot like my brother. This is exactly the kind of thing he used to do on a routine basis.

    1. With kids, you never know what you're going to find in the closet!

  12. Wasn't penicillin first found in this way? With more and more bacterias becoming resilient to anti-biotics your son could be onto something.

  13. You can expect to find more of the same in the future. It's a thing with boys. My son once put away a bag in his closet with wet swim trunks and towel inside. After they got moldy, my nose led me to the bag. I think he was 16 or 17.

    Love,
    Janie

  15. I'm one of those weirdos that would have enjoyed a picture. My wife has a habit of forgetting about food in weird places, and I always love to tease her with the ecosystems she starts curating, asking her things like "I wonder if they've developed a language system yet".

    1. That's funny! The mold in this bag was probably close to developing its own language!

  16. So glad it was in a bag. Hopefully that means the lunch box is still usable.

  18. I know where you are coming from ... my daughter left a thermos of food in her locker at school for much too long... the thermos made it's way into the garbage... I can only imagine how bad the sandwich looked... glad I can only imagine it... lol xox
