The Cleaning Game

I hope all of you American friends had a nice Thanksgiving!  We did.  And of course, after the feast, there was a huge clean up.  I enlisted the help of my kids.

"Bubba," I said.  "Please wash the cutting board."

"Okay, Mama," he said, and grabbed a sponge and dish washing soap.

A few minutes later, I checked on him.  It didn't look like he was making much progress.  "How's it going, Bubba?"

He grinned.  "Great!"

I stood next to him to inspect his work.  "Bubba, are you drawing on the cutting board with the soap?"

He shook his head.  "No, Mama. I'm practicing my cursive."  He pointed out his name written across the wooden board.  "Do you like it?"

"Sure.  Now you can practice seeing how fast you can erase it with the sponge!"

He did it super-fast.  "This cleaning game is fun!" he said.

"Good," I said.  "Because you can do it about ten more times with all the other pots and pans!"

  1. Our credit card machine died two hours after we opened the store for Black Thursday/Friday. Now we have an iPad where everyone is signing their name with their fingers. I think some of them should have done more practicing with dish soap and cutting boards.

  2. Do they still teach cursive? I guess we need it for our signatures.

    1. Yes, they do. I hope they never stop teaching it. There's been a lot of debate about whether or not to teach it.

  4. That's cute!

We have kids trace in sand when they are little to practice letters. They love it...anything that makes it a game, they love!

  6. I wish my daughters' school taught cursive. It's been such a thrill teaching the 10 year old cursive. //sarcasm// Maybe I'll employ Bubba's dish soap technique!

    1. Your daughter's school doesn't? That's too bad! My kids learned cursive in the second grade.

  7. LOL, of course Bubba would find a way to turn cleaning into a game!

    1. But of course! If anyone can find cleaning fun, it would be Bubba.

    1. I need to think of a game for cleaning toilets. I really dislike doing it. Maybe Bubba has a game for that!

  10. I think you have a touch of Huck Finn in you, Mama. Here's to getting Bubba to love more cleaning.

    1. It's a trick! All moms have to figure out how to make cleaning a game, or kids won't do it!

  14. I should practice my cursive. You have to be ten steps ahead of him, don't you?

  15. A good/fun way for him to practice his cursive writing.

  16. That's great that he wanted to write in cursive. I can't get my teenage boys to write in cursive for anything! Most boys revert back to printing. I wish I could make a game with my boys to get them to clean up. I think I'll try the "If you don't clean your room, no X-box for a month" game:-)

  17. Ha! Two skills at once. Good job.
It's frightening how so many kids don't know cursive anymore. The sheer number of historic documents that will make as much sense to people in five generations as Egyptian hieroglyphics make to us now... astounding!
