How to Open a Crown Cap Bottle Without a Bottle Opener

My boy, Bubba, wanted to open a bottle of Coke. The bottle had a crown cap - not one of those convenient twisty plastic caps. I'm not sure why he didn't use a bottle opener, but he found another genius way to open the bottle - with a hammer!

"I'm going to open a bottle with a hammer," he said.

Yeah, sure,  I thought. I expected to see broken pieces of glass as a result of this operation.

But he did it - without any spillage or breakage. With the head of the hammer under the lip of the cap, he slammed the hammer handle into the ground. The lid popped right off. If you don't believe it, check out this video for examples of how it's done.

Before I go, I wanted to let you know that for the month of July, two of my books (That Mama is a Gouch and Ten Zany Birds), are free from Smashwords. Visit here for the Grouch book, and here for the Bird book.

  3. Cool! I've never heard of opening a bottle with a hammer. When I was young, we called the bottle opener a "church key." I think it was because we used them to open beer bottles. I was naughty.

I hope things are going better in your household, dear friend Sherry. Take care and come see me again soon.

  9. Bubba is so bright and creative, like his Mama and I'm sure the other members of the family. Hope you're all doing well and enjoying the summer.

  15. He's more dexterous than you give him credit for! Now maybe you could enlist him and his hammer to do some DIY jobs around the home.

  16. He comes up with some very interesting "experiments." I'm predicting a major scientific break-through one of these days.

  17. I'm sure should I have tried this I'd have ended up in A&E having stitches.

We once had a friend of a friend open a bottle using his eye socket having at first taken out his glass eye. Perhaps something you should keep from Bubba.

  18. Now let's see him do that with his teeth. No, wait, don't do that. I'm cringing at the very thought. Impressive, though! And cheers to the free books!

  19. There was a local dive where they would line the cap up with the edge of the bar and then slam down on it with their palm to pop off the cap.
