Dog Genius

Our hundred pound German Shepherd, Schultz, is now six years old. (Which means I must've been blogging for six years, since he was just a puppy when I first started.) The dog is rather smart, but he never seemed to know my name. He knew "Daddy," and "Bubba," and my daughter's name. But not "Mama."

Time and time again, we'd ask him to "get Mama." and he never would. He'd go to the window and look out, even though I was standing two feet away from him.

Well, some kind of connection finally happened in his dog brain. The day he turned six, he figured it out.

"Go get Mama," my husband said.

And he did!

We made a big fuss about it.

We asked him the next day, and he remembered.

It's been a whole two weeks, and he still knows who I am. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?

  1. Maybe he thought of you in dog-talk as 'feeding lady' not Mama. . .

  2. Well, he's all grown up now - no more time to pretend he doesn't know who you are.

  3. Maybe he had a different name for you in his head. Perhaps he calls you Sherry or The Beautiful Lady or The Musician.

    1. I have no idea how he finally figured it out. Maybe he knew all along, and he was just pretending he didn't know.

  8. You might be able to teach an old dog new tricks, but an old human can be as stubborn as all get out.

  14. Oh that's so exciting he finally got it! Maybe it was because mamma sounds similar to dadda? But that's so great! You've been blogging the same amount of time as me!

  18. Hi, Sherry!

That's a curious phenomenon, especially since Schultz finally got the connection precisely on his birthday. Maybe all these years he was running to the window because he thought you meant his doggy mama, the German Shepherd, was arriving. :)

We used to laugh at our Toto at the start of every Christmas season when we'd start decorating the house. We'd look at her and exclaim, "Toto, Christmas is coming!" She start barking and run to the window and keep her eyes peeled. :)

Have a great weekend, dear friend Sherry!

    1. I found that most interesting, too. You may be right. He may have been waiting for his real mommy. And now he figures she's just not coming, so I'll have to do.

  20. We are convinced our German Shepherd Sorcia understands 75% of what we say. But she only pays attention to things that are important to her.

The other day, I said to our German exchange student, who has only been here a month, "Marie, you can feed the dog if you want."

Sorcia got up from the other room, came in, and stood in front of Marie expectantly. I get that she knows "feed the dog." But she also knew Marie was the one who was going to do it.

    1. I think dogs understand a lot more than we think they can.

  21. Dogs are smart, they play us right back sometimes:) I bet he knew "mama" all along;)

  22. There's definitely something to this. My dog was dumb as dirt for the first 6-7 years of his life. Now that he's 8, he understands everything I teach him instantly... and I really just don't understand it. Or question it.

    1. I wonder if their brain fully develops around that age. Like human brains aren't fully developed until their twenties. Interesting thought.
