Open Zoo

As I mentioned in my previous post, we're having a lot of construction done in my house. Workers go in and out, hauling machines and materials. For several days, our front door was left open. Fortunately, the weather was good. Unfortunately,  it was an open invitation for all kinds of critters to wander in.

The first such creature was a lizard. He strolled in, like it was perfectly natural to be in my house. He wandered around the front hall and then scurried off when he spotted me. I'm not exactly sure where he went, or where he is, but I do know that where he scurried was not outside.

Before I tell you about the second visitor, let me paint a picture of what my dining room currently looks like. Completely covering the dining room table is an assortment of plates, cups, and utensils. Some paper, some plastic, some china. There is also an row of cereal boxes and snacking items that were once in our pantry.  On the floor, is a bunch of pet food, pots, pans, dishes that are sort of clean, but not quite, because I had to take them out of the dishwasher before they were done so the workers could demolish our kitchen, and an assortment of stuff that had been under our kitchen sink. It's a mess! I can't even believe that I've been living in this condition for a month now. And it's not even close to over.

Anyway, when I walked into the dining room, I discovered a bee buzzing around the half-washed dishes on the floor. And he brought a buddy. Two bees.

"What do you think this is? A party?" I asked.

Of course they didn't answer. I have no idea where they went. Hopefully out. Along with all the other bugs and critters that have invaded our abode. If not, our cat, Bootsy, is going to have a big extermination project when this ordeal is over. (Because our dog, Schultz, wouldn't lift a paw to chase them out.)

  1. Lazy Schultz! If that lizard is still hanging around, you can bet your cat will get him. Hopefully not in pieces all over your house though.

    1. Bootsy will definitely get him. I haven't seen the lizard, though. Good thing!

  2. Eeek. Remodeling is such a mess, but worth it once it's all done. I'm sure the critters will find their way out. Eventually.

    1. I certainly hope so. I figure I'm going to find a dead lizard one of these days, because it died of starvation.

  3. I've never known a cat to attack a bee but they love to chase lizards--LOL! I'm more scared of bees and wasps--but love little lizards and have had them as pets. Maybe because I live far enough north that they are exotic--LOL! ;)

    1. When I lived in Florida, the lizards around our house were very friendly. I even named them.

  5. I get lizards in my house occasionally. Most of my windows are original to the house, built in 1940. It's easy for the lizards to break in and try to rob me. If I find them, I make them pay. Otherwise, they usually crawl under the piano to die. The next time the piano is moved I will find plenty of dead-lizard dust. I hope you don't get anything worse than lizards and bees.

    1. I hope it will be worth it. It's a challenge trying to pick things out and imagine how it's all going to look together!

  8. Yikes, that's very stressful. I hope your construction project is finished soon so the zoo leaves. That will be something to celebrate.

  9. So hard to go through remodeling with kids and pets and during the holidays. Yikes for having a lizard visit.

    1. Fortunately, we won't have any family staying with or visiting us during the holidays. Who knows, though, if I'm going to be doing any decorating this year.

  10. Thank goodness for the cat! Why is it construction always has to take three times as long as it should? My kitchen is in a state too, but that's because of Hurricane Irma. It's not bad--a few floorboards in the process of replacing, a little dry wall, etc. We can totally function regardless of the construction. I'm wishing you sanity, and that your mouser works hard throughout the coming weeks!

    1. Yes. Why does construction take so long? And why are there always complications? Ugh!

Sorry about your kitchen. I'm sure it's even harder for you because your kids are so young. At least mine are teenagers. They stay in their rooms while they're here. :)

  11. Oh, yikes! It's bad enough to have your house left in disarray like that for so long, but to have a bunch of critters sneak in as a result, too? *shudders* Hopefully nothing else decides to join the party!

  12. Bees I can cope with ... just. Not sure I'd be so calm if a lizard was to walk into our house. Not that this is likely to happen given where we live but still.

    1. It was a little lizard. Not too terrifying. If a komodo dragon walked in...that would be another story.

  13. Shut the doors! LOL! A lizard?? I would be freaking! We don't have lizards, so I can't even imagine that! Two bees?? You better watch out that they don't start making honey! LOL! I hope your kitchen gets finished soon! We were under major construction this year too, so I understand! Big Hugs!

    1. Maybe I should set up a hive and get the bees to make some honey for me while they're here!
