Mr. Sleepy

When my kids were little, I couldn't get them to sleep. Now I have the opposite problem. I can't get them to stay awake.

Let me tell you the story:

My teenage son, Bubba, had a morning doctor appointment. I dragged him in to the waiting area and had him sit on the sofa next to me. Two minutes later, he was asleep. When the nurse came out to get him, it was a major effort to awaken him. Everyone in the waiting area chuckled.

Two days later, he had an appointment at the dentist to get a cavity filled. Bet you can't guess what happened. Yes, he fell asleep in the chair!  I don't know how anyone falls asleep when they're having their teeth drilled, but my boy managed to do it. (Without medication!)

If you have/had teenagers, do you have any stories like this?

  1. If he fell asleep in the dentist's chair, that's a blessing! Wish I could sleep through that.

  4. Hi, Sherry!

Unless there is a specific explanation why Bubba is able to drop off to sleep in the daytime, such as staying up too late the night before, then I would consider it a gift. He is able to turn off his mind and sleep even when he visits the doctor or dentist, a setting that would have most most people wide awake with stress. I have a problem turning my mind off at bedtime and in the afternoon when I want and need a nap. I envy Bubba!

Enjoy the rest of your week and weekend, dear friend Sherry!

  5. It's strange how sleeping patterns change with childrem as you have found out. When one gets to my age we don't (it appears) needs so much sleep which is awful especially during the long winter's night.
I do enjoy your family stories it gives me an uplift. Thank you Sherry.
    Yvonne.

    1. Teenagers become night owls. There's no way I can get them to sleep at a reasonable time.

  6. I'm guessing my daughter might be like that. She's eight. I got her up this morning to get ready to go, then I went to wake up her brother and take care of the dogs. As my son and I were putting on our boots, I waited and wondered what was taking my daughter so long. I went upstairs again and heard her snoring before I even reached the top of the staircase.

    1. My son falls asleep like that, too. He sets his alarm so he wakes up in time to get to the bus.

  9. There's something in the teen brain that makes their sleep cycles whackadoodle. Enjoy the peace.

    1. I think we all naturally could use a nap around 1:00. Too bad there's no time to get one!

  13. Leave it to Bubba to fall asleep at the oddest times. One of our sons liked to stay awake all night, just to see if it could be done and he would stay awake at school.

  15. I would have thought falling asleep in a dentists chair would take some doing but obviously not. If only you could bottle some of what your son has, insomniacs (and those with a fear of the dentist) the world over would pay good money for it.

  16. Now that's some serious sleeping! I'm lucky that my son has always been a good sleeper, but lately, he's been getting harder to get up in the mornings. I worry what that's going to be like when he's a teen! Eep!

    1. He's making memes and reading books. Sure, I can take away his electronics, but he'll find something else to do. I try to get him sleeping by 11:00 PM. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't.
