Schultz's New Game and IWSG Question of the Month

Schultz, our giant nine-year-old German Shepherd, has learned a new trick. This new trick involves opening the door to the basement steps with his nose and throwing a tennis ball down the stairs. He loves watching the ball bounce all the way down to the landing. Then he retrieves it and does it again. He entertains himself for quite a while doing this. Unfortunately, when he's finished, he doesn't put his ball away. It stays on the landing. We'll have to see about teaching him yet another new trick and having him put his ball away.

It's time for the IWSG question of the month:  "What genre do you prefer writing and why?" I have always enjoyed writing children's books–picture books and middle-grade stories.  Probably because I'm a kid at heart. As a picture book writer, it's fun to see what the illustrator does with my manuscript. It's always a surprise. I also enjoy meeting the kids who read my books. Library visits and school visits are really the best part of being an author.

If you're a writer, what's your favorite genre to write?

  1. You should probably tell him about the basement goblins....

  2. I guess there are worse ways a dog can entertain himself.

  3. Your dog is certainly entertaining. I wish our dog had the legs to run up and down stairs as she is currently recovering from surgery.

  5. Being a kid at heart is the best! Not surprised you love writing children's books so much. I'm always seeing other writers say how enthusiastic that readership is. Must be very rewarding!

  6. I learned with my kids that once they put their toys away, life gets much easier. Good luck with the canine kid ;)
I enjoy writing for the same categories you do, PB to MG. Though I must say they take a different writing muscle for me.

  8. I love that Shultz knows how to entertain himself. I think he leaves the ball out for you to toss when he's done. He's just sharing. Grin. :-)

    1. Maybe he thinks I'd enjoy throwing it down the stairs and fetching it.

  9. Yes, you must tell Schultz to pick up his toys. Tell him it's part of doggie etiquette. For the question, I love writing children's books. Chapter books are fun and I liked writing our first picture book, too, although that one won't be published till later this year.

  12. I'm going to teach my 3 year old son that trick.

Genre? Is random humor a genre?

    1. Better watch he doesn't fall on his noggin when he's retrieving the ball! Random humor is a great genre. If it isn't an official one, it should be.

  13. Hi,
I too am a kid at heart. it's no wonder that Wordsworth said, the child is the father of man.
Wishing you all the best and your dog sounds like a delightful dog to have.

  14. Helping my mom with her picture books has been a joy. I've enjoyed seeing her stories come to life. I've written a couple myself, and have ideas for a few, but I haven't seen my own picture books illustrated yet.

Schultz is playing by himself. What a good boy.

  18. Good that Schultz can entertain himself but you are right he really must learn to put his toys away after he's done playing with them.

    1. I think we need to teach him how to open his toy closet so he can put the toys away.
