And since it's time for the IWSG post of the month, let me do that.

The question is, what do you do to get in the "zone" for writing?

I grab my notebook, pencil, and all of my notes and park myself on the floor with my legs stretched out. I never sit at my desk when I write. I'm stuck there with my computer all the time for my other jobs. Getting away from my desk gets me into the writing zone.  Sometimes I'll take my notebook outside. My favorite place is to write is at the beach. What about you? What do you do to get in the writing zone?

  1. Tomorrow is the big day! Excited that you are part of our anthology.
You're right - at a desk all day makes it hard to write there all night as well.

  2. Hi, Sherry! I read your interview on June's site and left a comment. Blog moderation is in effect and therefore my comment is awaiting approval.

I forgot to mention over there that it must be very exciting to do historical research based on the setting of your books because, the more you learn about the time period, the place and the people, the more ideas spring to mind for ways your characters can interact.

It's interesting that the writing ideas flow when you leave your desk and stretch out on the floor.

Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Sherry!

I definitely write better when I'm not at a desk!

  3. Sherry, congratulations on the new release. Sounds like a fascinating read. I do most of my writing with paper and pen/pencil so the zone moves around with me.

  7. Congratulations on having a piece published in this anthology. I like to write in different places--coffee shops on deserted beaches (benefit of being able to paddle over to undeveloped islands), at the marina, but getting out and exercising before hand always helps.

Getting in *the zone* is also getting easier as I'm beginning to accept the new zone all of humanity seems to have entered. Changes rattle, but we adjust.

I look forward to reading all the stories in the Anthology. I've already got my copy on my iPad.

  20. Congratulations on your short story/anthology release, Sherry! Your story was great fun! I love Bubba and Squirt. I had a little sympathy with the grouchy old seismologist. I've know a lot of scientists well, and they're fascinating creatures. I'm also fascinated with volcanoes. Tom Jaggar, who was the founder of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory on the island of Hawaii, was also the brother to Miss Jaggar who befriended my mother and encouraged her to go to university. Mom was the "pretty daughter," not the "smart" one, and no one in her family had gone to university. They were very poor, but managed it. As a geologist, I've studied and visited volcanoes ~ So your story for younger readers gave me a lot of insight into how to handle science with that age group! Thank you! Take care!

    1. Hi Karen. I use the sofa as a back rest. I know it's kind of funny that I don't sit on the sofa. I sprawl out with all of my papers better on the floor. :)

  24. Yeah, sitting at a desk after doing it 8 hours a day isn't a place one wants to be.

  25. I like how you get into the zone! I used to be able to sit on the floor for long periods, but not so much any more.

  30. Congrats on being part of another great anthology. I admire the approach of getting away from the computer. I agree that writing by hand or in a different place seems to offer fresh inspiration - but there's no way I could write an entire draft like that. I wouldn't be able to read it!
