Today's IWSG question is, "What stresses you out as a writer? What brings you joy?"
Stresses: Trying to complete a project when I either don't have time, or I have writer's block. Sometimes revisions stress me out, too, but mostly because of my time issues.
What brings joy: Completing a project, knowing people like my work, and selling books—lots of them!
How about you? What things make you want to pull your hair out, and what makes you jump up and down?
Certain rejections stress me out, but not most of them. It's the "almosts" that get to me. I also worry before each writing session that I won't be able to... But then I just do.
ReplyDeleteAs to joy, it's the writing of first drafts when what martializes surprises me. Pure joy.
It's never fun to get rejections! Yes, finishing a manuscript is definitely a reason to celebrate!
DeleteI imagine when the first draft is down on the screen, it's a reason to jump for joy. And yes, getting revisions back would stress out most writers.
ReplyDeleteCompleting a first draft is a huge relief. It's nice to see a story that works.
DeleteHi, Sherry!
ReplyDeleteYessum, I can relate to the stress of having to make last minute changes with a deadline approaching. I was constantly experiencing that type of upset when I worked as a TV news producer. Last minute changes to the script invited on-air mistakes, something I tried very hard to avoid, but breaking news cannot be ignored. It needs to be dealt with. Invariably it precipitated a stressful last minute scramble just before the show started.
Your family's pooch Klaus must be on his best behavior lately hoping that Santa will bring him treats and toys. Otherwise you would have reported his latest mischief.
Have a wonderful Christmas, dear friend Sherry!
I bet your job was very stressful! I admire people who can work on the fly like that.
DeleteKlaus actually got a bag of doggy "coal" in his stocking. ;) He must've been especially bad this year. LOL!
Selling lots of books is always good!
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas, Sherry.
I agree! Hope you had a great Christmas. Happy New Year!
DeleteYes, I get stressed when I can't finish something, especially when I see good contests I'd like to enter to try to get an agent. But, it's best to wait until you're done to do those things. Happy Holidays!
ReplyDeleteI agree. Otherwise it's a lot of pressure to get it done.
DeleteHappy New Year!
I imagine the biggest stress for writers is when their work is not appreciated either by the publisher or readers. I've often seen good writers neglected by their own publishers and it stresses me out myself just watching it LOL
ReplyDeleteThat's sad. (Most) Writers put a lot of time and effort into their work, so it hurts when there's no appreciation.
DeleteTime, or lack thereof, is such a stressor. I hope 2022 brings more time for project completion!
ReplyDeleteYes! And I hope 2022 does the same for you.
DeleteIt's so hard to write on short time. Wouldn't it be nice if we could just write and not have to worry about any other life tasks?
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! It seems there's never enough time in the day.
DeleteI seem to need a bit of stress to bring an article to completion, but it's always nice when it's accepted and I see it in print.
ReplyDeleteThat's the rewarding part about writing. That all of your effort yielded something makes it worthwhile.
Deletealmost the same with you...
ReplyDelete# Have a great weekend
Thank you, and Happy New Year!
DeleteWe have to take the delightful with the stressful - it's part of the overall package - can't have one without the other, hey?
ReplyDeleteHope you have a Merry Christmas and a Peaceful & Prosperous New Year, Sherry!
Thank you! Same to you!

I am of the mindset that having time is more about picking what to prioritize. Though the last couple of years feel like choice belongs less and less to individuals and more about the health of everyone around us. But anyway.
ReplyDeleteHope you had a good IWSG day!
I'm enjoying #WRiTECLUB2021 over at DL Hammons blog. The entries are fun to read and vote on with feedback.
Plus, I'm currently reading Patricia Lynne's Being Human. (The IWSG Goodread's book club choice for December.)
And I'm scheduling debut author interviews at Operation Awesome.
I hope you have some fun plans for the rest of 2021. 🎆⛸🥁✉🥂⛄ May your days ahead be merry and filled with positive experiences.
It's been challenging to get out and market books, for sure, due to Covid. I think part of my own procrastination is because I want to be able to go into schools to promote my books and I can't yet. I'd rather wait to put another book out so that I can market it properly.
DeleteI find editing stressful when I am doing them- but so rewarding when they are done. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
