Zoned Out Dog

Have you ever seen a dog on drugs?  It isn't pretty.

Our hundred pound German Shepherd, Schultz, had a little visit to the veterinarian, yesterday.  He needed some vaccinations, and a good teeth cleaning.  (It's best to put hundred pound German Shepherds to sleep before attempting to clean their teeth. I'm sure you don't need an explanation why.)

The vet knock him out good.  He was down for hours.  When my husband picked him up, the dog was incredibly loopy.  He could barely stand, let alone walk. Somehow, he managed to get into the house, where he promptly parked himself in his favorite spot, stuck his tongue out (with his mouth mostly closed), and stared at me with a glazed expression.

When the kids came home from school, they were very concerned.

"What's wrong with Schultzy?" they asked.  "Why is he just sitting there with his tongue sticking out like that?"

"Because he's on drugs," I said.  "Don't do drugs, or you'll act and look as stupid as him!"

(For those who are concerned, Schultz is just fine, now.  By the evening, he was back to his normal, goofy self.  And for those who like pictures, I decided not to take any, to preserve some of his dignity.  It would've been humorous to see a stoned German Shepherd, but you'll just have to imagine what he looked like.)

  1. I can picture exactly what this looks like, Sherry, because my Boston Terrier looked and acted the same way after his dental surgery. Poor little (and big!) puppies! Schultz thanks you for preserving his dignity :)

  4. Nice catchy opening.

A warning to others - "Don't do drugs, or you'll act and look as stupid as him!"

  6. Hehehe, I've seen that same thing with my 15lb shiba inu--the goofy little grin and everything. Glad he's doing better! And very true, don't do drugs. :)

  7. Our dog gets "happy pills" when thunderstorms approach and is both funny and sad to see him doped out. Glad he's okay and hopefully with better breath.

    1. No. The cat stayed away, which was very smart on his part.

  10. It sounds as if they sent him home a little too soon. When my dogs have their teeth cleaned, they're fully awake when I'm called to get them from the vet's office.

    1. I was rather surprised at his condition. I thought he had been put under another time, and I don't remember seeing him like that. I think you're right. He did come home a little too early.

  11. I was told all dogs are put to sleep for that? Maybe yours just need extra-heavy dosage! My dog's groomer says she needs her teeth cleaned but my vet says she doesn't. They gave me a toothbrush and told me to just scrub her teeth every day. I've lost the toothbrush...oops.

    1. We brush Schultz's teeth, too, with chicken flavored toothpaste. The stuff is disgusting, but Schultz doesn't seem to mind. He needed tarter scraped off his teeth. Apparently Greenies aren't enough.

  12. My mom has a dog who had to be knocked out for a haircut once. She was flopped on her back, in my arms (or my moms, we had to trade off a couple times) with her tongue sticking out. I even tried pushing it back into her mouth but it acted like it wouldn't fit. Considering everyone said, "Wow she's a got a reach when she wants to give kisses!" it makes sense.

    1. Dogs do have long tongues! Schultz's nearly touches the ground when he's in full pant!

  14. I've seen drugged-up dogs before. It always makes me sad to see them out of it like that, no matter what the reason. I'm sure Schultz appreciates having his dignity preserved!

    1. Yes. I'm sure he doesn't want to look in the photo album and see himself messed up like that.

  17. Happy to hear he is back in his normal self. I have never seen a dog on drugs. I think it is very different from a cat with a catnip fix.

    1. Really different! My cat is a maniac on catnip. Schultz didn't even move for several hours. He just sat there with his tongue sticking out.
