Motor Bikes

"I'm going to go ride my bike," my eleven-year-old son announced.

"Okay," I said. "Have fun."

About twenty minutes later, I heard a ridiculous amount of noise. I looked up and saw my boy and his friends coming down the street on their bikes. The noise was coming from their bikes. They sounded like a twenty-person motorcycle gang.

When they pulled in the driveway I walked over to ascertain what was causing this din. I found plastic cups rigged to the bikes' fenders which hit the wheel spokes as the bikes were pedaled. "Seriously?" I asked. "What were you guys thinking?"

My son grinned. "We're thinking motor bikes are way cooler than regular bikes. Do you like them?"

I shook my head. "You get an A+ for creativity, but an F for being respectable citizens. You'd better take those things off before someone calls the police because you guys are disturbing the peace!"

Oy!

  1. Hi, Sherry! I'm thinking your son has earned a new nickname - "Leader of the Pack." :) Don't be too hard on the lad. When I was his age I attached playing cards to my bike wheel with clothespins to make that sound. But hey, why settle for that low tech stuff when your son and his budding cycle gang can get the job done right with Turbospoke Bike Exhaust Systems?

Have a happy Wednesday, dear friend Sherry!

    1. He certainly is the leader of the pack! This Turbospoke Bike Exhaust System sounds like something Bubba would love! ( A lot noisier than playing cards on spokes!) Have a great weekend, Shady!

  2. Yikes! I can just imagine the noise that would've created.

    1. It was unbelievable. It really sounded like a pack of motorcyles!

  3. Well at least they don't need gas like real motorcycles, saving the environment lol

    1. They're just creating noise pollution. I don't think that'll harm the ozone. :o)

  4. Would've been worse than the cans they tie behind cars at weddings.

    1. Yeah. Those cans, in my opinion, are kind of obnoxious. This was even noisier than that!

  6. Haha... he is creative... he probably shouldn't do that around you and the neighbors... ;-)

    1. At least he wasn't riding around at midnight. That would've been even worse!

  8. Creative kids. My mom would probably have given me the death stare. It's effective. I still fear it to this day:)

    1. Haha! I've perfected the death stare, too. I only use it in cases of real emergencies. This didn't qualify. :)

  10. That must have gotten Bubba and his friends noticed around the neighborhood. We'd have been in big trouble if we did that. Yikes.

    1. I think I would've given myself a headache if I had been riding on a vehicle that sounded like that!

  11. This reminds me of playing cards hitting against spokes....yep, I did it.

  12. I've read about kids doing things like this with their bikes since I grew up. I keep wishing I would have heard about it as a kid too so I could have done it.

    1. It's not too late. You can be a grandpa figure riding around the neighborhood with cards clothes-pinned to your spokes. Of course you might get sent to the asylum for doing it, but you'll have had fun! ;0)

  13. Very clever of them, but yeah, I can imagine it was very noisy. :-D

    1. You wouldn't believe how noisy! I can't believe he got all his friends to do it, too.

  15. Glad to hear of such creativity. I remember my sister doing this with her bike when she was a girl.

  16. I've seen stuff like that before. Of course, when I was a kid they used playing cards to get the "brrbrbrbrbrbr" sound. haha

  17. Motor bikes may be cooler than regular bikes, but silence is always cooler than noise!

  18. I remember when boys used to put cards, as in the Queen of Hearts, on the spokes of their bike wheels. I don't remember a girl every doing that.

    Love,

    1. Cherdo said she did it. Must be the tomboys who pull stunts like that. (Although I was a tomboy, but I didn't do it, either. Riding dirt bikes off ramps was more my style.)

  19. Hi Sherry. I am a new follower. I read your wonderful interview on Chrys Fey's blog and you sounded like such a fun and interesting person, I had to come on over. Excellent interview, by the way. :-) I couldn't help but chuckle at such a cute post. I remember as a kid we would put playing cards on the spokes of our bikes to make noise. I look forward to more. Have a super weekend.
