Scientifically Speaking

Many of you who have been following this blog for a while, remember when my son was five years old. He has always had a very creative, think-outside-of-the-box kind of mind. The boy is now a teenager, and that creativity has manifested itself in the realm of science.

His latest interest is nuclear fusion. He can talk for hours about the subject.

The other day, my daughter, son, and I took a little trip to Hobby Lobby to get painting supplies for my daughter (who is also a teenager, and a talented artist). Bubba was on one of his nuclear fusion chat-a-thons. He continued all the way to the check-out line.

When we got there, the cashier started ringing the merchandise, but then stopped. She put everything down and stared at Bubba as he talked about the heat necessary to create a nuclear reaction.  He just kept talking. Finally she spoke in her fine southern drawl.  "Young man, I have no idea what you're talking about, but it sounds very intellectual. I'm glad there are minds like yours out there to keep society moving on."

Then she turned to me. "Good luck, Mom!"

This is not my son, but he sure sounds like him! You can get a sample of what I listen to every day.

(And if you would like to learn more about nuclear fusion, go here.)

  1. Maybe you have a young Sheldon on your hands? Hopefully with a little more people skills than Sheldon though!

  2. My daughter always talked about math, and my son talked about everything else. They talked so much that now I want to spend the rest of my life in silence.

  3. Hi, Sherry!

I read Alex's comment. Question: Does Bubba use the word BAZINGA a lot? :)

All I can say is, I watched the two YouTube videos you gave us and I still don't understand nuclear fusion. Then again, I'm still learning how to wave bye-bye!

This is a great cut and paste:

"Taylor Wilson believes nuclear fusion is a solution to our future energy needs, and that kids can change the world."

I'm sure you are happy knowing that Bubba has a kid like Taylor as a role model and that he has his mind on nuclear fusion when so many other kids have their minds in the gutter. You can be proud, dear friend!

  6. Physics is a good subject. Make sure he's keeping up with his math. This is something he can totally major in and work in for his whole life.

  7. The best thing to do for him is to help him stay interested in some of these ideas. He should go very far.

  9. Sounds like a great premise for a MG series! My boys are teens too. Sniff, sniff. My oldest can talk your ear off about technology.

  18. Wow, that's great how Bubba is so passionate about science! That subject was always one of my biggest struggles in school, unfortunately, so chats about nuclear fusion and the like would probably go right over my head, haha.

    1. Can't say that would be a favorite topic. I was more into genetic engineering.
