Using AI to Write a Synopsis

There has been a lot of debate on whether or not AI should be used to create books and illustrations. But what about writing book blurbs?  Today's question for the IWSG group asks if you've ever used it to write a blurb or synopsis.  After hearing about all the controversy, I decided to give it a shot when writing the blurb for my last book. (What do they say? Curiosity killed the cat?) I was curious. So I put in the information about my book and waited for it to spew out the blurb. It wasn't bad, but I wasn't enamored. I played around with the words, trying to see if I could create something spectacular. No dice. So I scrapped the whole thing and came up with my own blurb which is way better. (I think). My conclusion? I think the human brain is better than AI when it comes to creating, and an author knows his/her book way better than any AI does. Have you ever used AI? Were you happy with the results?

  1. All that work and it didn't give you anything usable.
AI has no soul or emotion and can't replace those human elements.

    1. I don't know if AI will improve with time, but so far, I'm not impressed.

  2. That was a great experiment to try. I'm not sure if I'm glad or sad that it didn't pan out for you.

  3. Yeah, I'm not keen on the way AI writes, myself. I went looking for inspiration, and I ended up just judging its skills, thinking "sheesh, this has no voice." Guess I have to do it myself to make myself happy.

  4. I haven't tried to write a synopsis with it. But it is a time-saver for writing informative articles for my job. I still need to correct and edit what it writes, but it is helpful.

    1. I think a lot of people will find it a time saver, or find that it helps generate ideas.

  5. I've never used AI, but I think an author would be better at writing their own blurb. I could see it being a good starting point if you were really stuck, but it would definitely need some tweaking.

  6. Interesting. Hadn't occurred to me to try, and now I'm just plain curious to compare it to what my wee brain has come up with.

    1. It comes up with some flowery sentences. Good, but not quite what I was looking for.

    1. It's a hotly-debated topic. Every writers' event has a talk about it.

  9. I boo and hiss on AI, we must fight against it lest it overpowers us and becomes our ruler.

    1. I definitely don't want to see humans dumbed-down by relying on AI to do the thinking!

    # In my case, I use AI to collect info or data, then find other resources to confirm
