Detention for Mama

Last night was school curriculum night at my daughter's middle school.  Parents had to meet with each teacher for seven minutes.  When the bell rang, indicating it was time to switch to the next class, we had two minutes to get to the next one.  I felt just like a student, crammed in the halls, trying to make it to the next class, which was in some remote part of the building.

I did pretty well, until the fifth period.  The teacher blah blah blahed way past the sound of the bell.  Since I'm such a polite person, I stayed to listen to what he had to say.  That was a mistake.  There was no way I was ever going to make it to the next class before the bell rang.

Sure enough, I arrived late.  The teacher gave me a funny look.  "You're allowed only two more tardies, and then I'm going to have to give you a detention."

"But...," I protested.

"No 'buts'," she said. "Have a seat."

"Yes, Ma'am."

In middle school one day, and I'm already in trouble!

  1. *LOL* Two minutes isn't enough time to get around. I had five minutes between classes in high school and that didn't seem like enough either.

    1. Now I understand why my daughter is so stressed out by the time she gets home from school!

  2. Do the kids have only two minutes to get to class? When I was the education reporter at a newspaper, some high school students started a petition because they needed more than four minutes to get to class (it was a very big school). I spent a day going to classes with a girl who started the petition. I was petrified when I saw all these huge young men rushing down the hall between classes. I wrote a column about it and they got five minutes. Better than nothing. I promise I will never give you detention.

    1. Yes, they really only get two minutes. Maybe you should write a column for my daughter's school! Thank you for not giving me a detention. You're the best blog mom ever!

    2. Two minutes is not enough. It will cause the kids to crash into one another and be injured.

  7. LOL! And two minutes is definitely not enough time. I think we had three when I was in middle school, and I remember having to run to get to a few of my classes before the bell.

    1. It's ridiculous to have only two minutes! And then the teachers stand there telling the kids not to run!

  9. Two minutes? Too short. It must have been like one big race to get to the next class. I can't help smiling reading about being back in school again.

    1. It's a wonder there aren't more collisions in the hall with all those kids racing around!

  10. LOL! I used to have nightmares before school started almost every year about not remembering where my locker was or the locker combination--or both--and not being able to make it to the next class before the bell. Every year. I will probably have a nightmare tonight for old time's sake--LOL! ;)
