The Flying Carpet Ride

Our hundred pound German Shepherd, Schultz, has a new trick.  It's called the Flying Carpet Ride.

I couldn't believe the first time I saw it.  I was sitting at my computer, typing another chapter of my work in progress, when the furry beast ran into the front hall at a breakneck speed.  He jumped, landed on the area rug that's in front of our door, and skidded across the hard wood floor.

"What the heck, Schultz?" I said.

He got off the rug and looked at me with his big pink tongue hanging out and a huge smile plastered on his silly face.

I shook my head and continued typing.

Fifteen minutes later, the nutcase ran into the hall and did it again.

Obviously the beast has had some experience doing this.  I don't know how he discovered that the carpet slides when he runs and jumps on it, but it seems to be his new favorite game.

What will the dog think of next?

(I'm sorry, I don't have a video of this.  If I ever catch him in the act, and am able to film it, I'll post it.  It's hilarious!)

  1. I bet he has a blast doing that! Maybe your kids taught him or he saw one of them doing it?

    1. I think he figured it out himself. There's another German Shepherd in the neighborhood, that he doesn't seem to like. He runs to the door when he sees her and starts barking. I bet on one of those occasions, he slid on carpet and discovered how much fun it was.

  4. Awwww. Beautifully described. Dogs are such darlings - and I am always amazed with the things they're able to do.

    1. He has a creative little mind. When he was a puppy, he used to remove the coverings of the vents on the floor, and put his dog bowls in them. Crazy!

  5. I'm laughing. I think it happened as a accident and he liked it, so he continued. Just hope Bubba doesn't copy him.

  6. probably a part of cat's plan in which in a later phase the cat will open the door while the dog is sliding and then close it behind him

  7. That must have been so funny, Sherry. Wish you had a video. Schultz probably wants to be famous so he wants everyone to know about his talents.

  11. I can imagine a dog having a great time sliding on the carpet. Sounds like a hoot to watch him do that!

  12. My moms dogs do the same thing! Well, all except one. The biggest dog is literally scared of wet floors and anything else that is slick and might make him fall. He'll try to eat planes, garbage trucks, has sent people running up a tree to hide when he got loose and went on a trot (no, really, like a horse) because he's so big. But if you mop the floors, he starts crying.

  13. One of my cats moves rugs around. He kicks his back legs so hard when he runs. He doesn't ride them, though.

  16. My dog will chase a ball all day long; when she gets to the kitchen she will begin a long slide - right into the wall.

    1. Schultz does the slide, too. It's so funny when he collides with the wall.

  17. That's great! I love it when dogs and cats come up with fun ways to entertain themselves (and their humans).
