The Big Bike Show

"Mama," my eight-year-old son said, running into the house.  "Come and see our bike show!"

"What are you talking about?" I asked.

"Just come on.  You'll see."

I followed the boy outside to a street a few blocks away.  In the middle of a cul-de-sac was a bike ramp.

Uh oh, I thought.  This can't be good.

About seven boys were biking around, doing all kinds of not-so-safe tricks.  I watched as my boy jumped the ramp.  Then he whipped around and did some kind of fancy one-foot-on-the-pedal, one-foot-up-in-the-air move.  I thought I was going to have a heart-attack.

"Uh, Bubba," I said.  "I'm not so sure this is safe."

"Don't worry, Mama.  I've been practicing."

Uh huh. He's been practicing.

I watched the show for about a half hour.  Miraculously, nobody got hurt.  I was glad when his bike was in the garage and he was safe in the house.

Wasn't it just last year that I taught him how to ride his bike?

  2. My grandsons never liked to just ride their bikes. They had to do dozens of tricks. They went through a lot of bikes.

  3. That sounds like quite a surprise.

I sometimes see kids doing skateboard tricks in my neighborhood. My heart clenches, but they seem to be okay.

  4. Yikes. I would have felt the same way. Of course, I'm a big chicken about things like that, and my kids are brave. LOL

    1. I did things like that when I was a kid, but it's another story when you're the mom watching your kids do it!

  5. Boys are so tough! Get get him some really cool shin guards and knee and elbow pads and make it all the rage! It's cool that he's so independent and fearless!

    1. It is pretty cool that he's not afraid to do those tricks. At least he's wearing a helmet. I'll have to make him wear elbow and knee pads.

  6. Eek! I would have a heart attack myself. Good for him for learning to do it, though!

Thanks so much for the great review you put up on Fearless. :)

  7. Boys will be boys. They're not content to just ride the bike as per normal, they have to experiment and get up to all kinds of tricks...
Remember: he DID practise... smart guy!

  8. Children have sharp reflexes and aren't held back by fear of accident. That comes later . . .

    1. It is amazing how fearless they are. I remember being that way, too. When I look back on things, I'm amazed I didn't end up in the hospital!
